After chatting the night away with Cedric, Toby, and a few other Hufflepuff students whose names had slipped his mind, Matthew found himself exhausted in the morning, a feeling like a hangover lingering over his body. Of course Matthew's never been hungover before, since he was only eleven, but he imagined this is what they felt like. Headache, sore throat, and the desire to go back to sleep.
Matthew normally wasn't an early riser, being all too familiar with his mother coming to wake him up nearly every morning. Today though, the young boy was up and ready for the day with more than enough time to spare before his first period class.
The excitement of being at Hogwarts came during the night, allowing Matthew to wake up early and eagerly start his day. Toby seemed to be in the same mood, he just moved a lot slower than Matthew. The dark haired boy was out of bed, but he lazily started pulling his clothes out of his trunk while Matthew ran downstairs into the Common Room to give him some privacy.
There was a few students in the Common Room, doing last minute homework or talking quietly with their friends. Cedric was among the students, stretched out on a golden yellow couch that held many pillows of different sizes and materials. The boy looked to be half asleep as he listened to his friend, who sat across from him, talk about their classes for the year. Cedric didn't look interested at all to say the least. The second year would rather have been asleep, but quickly sat up as he saw Matthew walk by.
"Morning, Matthew!" Cedric put his arm up to wave to the younger boy, his elbow resting against the back of the couch.
"Good morning." Matthew smiled as he sat down in an empty armchair by the fireplace.
"Not hungry?" Cedric asked, noting that Matthew wasn't on his way out of the Common Room to go for breakfast.
"No, I am. I'm just waiting for Toby." Matthew replied just as his friend came walking down the stairs, moving more like a zombie than a boy. Matthew could only wonder if that's what he looked like every morning at home.
"Well, there he is. Good morning, Toby." Cedric greeted the boy with a smile.
"Morning, Cedric. Matthew, are we going for breakfast?" Toby was still half asleep, but he was also hungry. Matthew knew that tired and hungry was not a good combination as he stood up from the armchair.
"Yeah, let's go. Are you guys hungry?" Matthew said to Toby then turned back to Cedric, and the boy he was sitting across from named Andrew.
"Uhh, sure. I could eat." Cedric replied as him and Andrew stood up off the couches they were sitting on. Cedric stretched out his body then fixed his shirt before heading over to the entrance of the Common Room. All four Hufflepuffs left the room, heading to the Great Hall for breakfast.
"So, what classes do you two have today?" Cedric asked as he walked down a corridor with Andrew on one side and Matthew on the other. Toby was beside Matthew.
"Herbology, History of Magic, flying lessons, then Potions. In that order." Matthew replied, smiling proudly that he was able to remember his schedule. He just had no idea where each of his classes were.
"Then tomorrow we have Transfiguration, Charms, Astronomy, and Defence Against the Dark Arts. I don't think in that order though." Toby added, glancing over at Matthew for reassurance that he remembered their classes.
"Yeah. I think I'm most excited for Astronomy." Matthew stated. Ever since he was little, and he used a telescope for the first time with his father, he had a strong interest in Astronomy and all things relating to stars and outer space.
"I like Charms. Andrew here is a big Defence Against the Dark Arts kinda guy." Cedric explained, nudging his friend in the side as they walked.
"I just feel safer knowing I'll be able to defend myself against evil." Andrew retorted, glaring at Cedric as if Defence Against the Dark Arts was a bad class to enjoy.
"Don't worry, I'll protect you if anything evil comes lurking." Cedric stated with a grin. Even though Andrew and Cedric were both lanky second years, the Diggory boy stood a few inches taller than his friend.
Toby and Matthew chuckled at the confrontation between the two obviously close friends. The first year boys were pretty much the same height, Matthew's messy blonde hair making him look slightly taller. The boys hoped that Cedric's promise to protect Andrew applied to them as well, since they didn't have a days worth of training against dark arts.
The four Hufflepuffs finally made it to the Great Hall, taking a seat before starting to fill their plates with breakfast. Cedric and Toby were apparently a lot more hungrier than Matthew and Andrew, as the amount of food on each of their plates was vastly different. Cedric was the winner for the most food, including eggs, bacon, and jelly covered toast. All Matthew had on his plate was a muffin.
