A white blanket of snow cascaded across the grounds of Hogwarts, the sunlight making it look like it sparkled. Hogwarts was buzzing with talk of the upcoming holidays, the fresh snow putting a happy feeling in nearly everyone's heart.
The change in season made Matthew miss his mum and dad, but also Belle who was probably pawing at the back door every ten seconds, wanting to go outside and play. Belle and Matthew had a love for snow in common, spending hours outside playing in it until their toes were numb.
Waking up on a early Sunday morning, Matthew looked out one of the Hufflepuff windows to see the winter wonderland. He jumped out of bed in excitement before rushing over to Toby's bed and shaking him awake.
"Toby! It snowed! Get out of bed!" Matthew exclaimed, only getting a grunt in response from his friend. Matthew started getting ready for his day, wanting to go outside.
"I didn't know snow was a good reason to get out of bed." Toby grumbled as he reluctantly pulled some warm clothes on, not wanting to disappoint his friend by staying in bed. It seemed the roles were reversed this morning, with Toby normally being the early riser while Matthew slept in as long as he could. However, the blonde boy was too excited about the snow to stay in bed any longer.
Once both boys were ready, they left their dormitory and headed down to the Common Room. It seemed that Toby and Matthew were the only Hufflepuffs awake, as the Common Room was empty of any inhabitants. A fire flickered sadly in the fireplace, not having an audience.
"Come on!" Matthew ran out of the common room, leading the way down the corridors to the nearest exit so he could go outside and enjoy the snow. However, as Matthew and Toby rounded a corner, they nearly crashed into Professor McGonagall.
"Good morning." The professor said casually, a hint of amusement in her voice. "Where are you two going in such a rush?"
"G-good morning, Professor. We, Toby and I were just heading outside in the, well, it snowed last night, and I like snow. So we were going to go outside and see it." Matthew couldn't organize his thoughts as he rambled on about where him and his fellow Hufflepuff were headed.
"And a window won't suffice to look at the snow?" McGonagall asked, glancing between the two first years, one of them being more than eager to run around in the snow.
"We don't get the same experience with just looking out a window, Professor." Toby chimed in, trying not to laugh at the state his friend was in.
"Alright. Well, don't skip out on breakfast." McGonagall was in a good mood this morning, as she also loved the snow and knew how excited Matthew was. She let the running in the corridors slide, for now.
"Thank you, Professor. We won't!" Toby and Matthew said nearly in unison before walking on either side of the professor to get around her, walking at a brisk pace that didn't quite clasify as running. Minerva let out a small chuckle as she watched the blonde and black haired boys run away, being oddly reminded of two other boys that used to roam these same corridors.
Matthew and Toby were hit with a cold winter breeze as they walked outside, the crisp air filling their lungs.
"Hopefully you put your snow boots on." Matthew stated as he ran down the stone steps and into the fresh layer of snow that didn't have a single footprint in it yet.
"Why wouldn't I?" Toby asked, laughing as he followed Matthew's movements and ran into the snow. Laughter filled the air as a snowball collided with Toby's shoulder, the boy expressing a fake annoyance before reaching into the snow and forming his own snowball. Matthew stopped laughing as he was hit in the chest, both boys acknowledging that it was game on.
Snow met bare skin as Matthew scooped up another clump, having too much fun to care that his hands were getting cold. Both boys had rosy cheeks from the cold, especially when one of Matthew's snowballs hit Toby in the face.
"Oh, I'm so sorry! Are you alright?" Matthew rushed over to his friend, worry replacing his happiness.
"Yeah, I'm alright. You just got snow down my coat." Toby replied, chuckling softly at the concern written across his friend's face, when just moments ago it had been a large grin.
"We should probably head in. I don't want you to freeze." Matthew was also getting too cold to bare anymore, and wanted to cozy up in front of the Hufflepuff Common Room's fireplace after eating breakfast in the Great Hall.
"Okay." Toby didn't argue, and followed Matthew back inside. The boys kicked the snow off their boots as they stepped inside, not wanting to track snow all throughout the castle. However, as the boys walked to the Great Hall, they realized there wasn't a trace of snow. It was like the floors had some sort of enchantment that dried their boots.
It didn't take long for Matthew and Toby to reach the Great Hall, breakfast already well underway. The boys walked over to the Hufflepuff table and took their seats beside each other before immediately digging into the multiple different breakfast foods that were served on large gold dishes. Matthew decided on pancakes and sausage, while Toby loaded his plate with scrambled eggs, bacon, and hash browns.
Cedric sat furthur up the table, out of hearing or talking distance from Matthew and Toby. He was busy with his breakfast, and talking with the other Hufflepuffs around him. However, Cedric and Matthew had managed to lock eyes once, the older boy smiling widely while Matthew waved in greeting.
Author's Note
I love Toby and Matthew's friendship so much. It will definitely develop a lot more as the series goes on. I have something big planned for Toby that I think will blow you all away.
