Second year had a slightly bigger work load than first year, and Matthew found himself in the library with a short stack of work he needed to get done. It was only the second day of classes, but Professor Snape, the Potions teacher, had insisted on giving all of his students an essay to write. The miserable man seemed...more miserable than usual, and was taking it out on every student except those in his own house, Slytherins. Snape was quite a biased teacher and Matthew couldn't stand him.
"Hello, Matt." The boy heard the voice of his younger cousin say, as she stood on the other side of the table he was sitting at.
"Hey, Hermione. You've got homework too?" Matthew asked, noticing the stack of books in the first year's hands.
"Only a bit. I wanted to come down and do some reading." Hermione replied, setting her books down on the table. Matthew reached out and grabbed a thick novel that didn't look like anything he read in first year.
"So, these are for fun?" Matthew asked, raising an eyebrow at his cousin.
"Yes. I brought this one from home." Hermione explained, pointing at the book Matthew had in front of him before taking it away. She then sat down across from the boy, setting her bag down beside her. She cracked open one of her books, pushing the others away. Matthew didn't seem to care as he turned back to his Transfiguration homework, that he was only doing as a way to procrastinate on his Potions essay.
"I'm sorry, I didn't even ask if I could sit here. Is it alright if I sit here and work?" Hermione declared as she shut her book, looking up at Matthew.
The boy let out a chuckle, and didn't bother looking up from his work. "Yes, 'Mione. It's fine." He replied, and got a sigh of relief in response as Hermione reopened her book.
The two Granger children worked in silence for a while. The only noises at their table where the flips of book pages and a quill scratching against parchment. Matthew wondered if Hermione's desire to read wasn't the only reason she found herself in the library. Since it was so early in the term, he couldn't help but think that maybe she hadn't made any friends in her house yet, and came to the library to pass the time.
Matthew had left Hufflepuff Common Room because his friends were being too nosy for any focusing on his work to occur, and was constantly getting interrupted by Cedric's annoying pokes and Tobias making all the boys laugh. He was quite humourous, and Matthew couldn't contain his laughter that pulled him away from his studies. Andrew had also been trying to get some work done, but eventually gave up to join in on the fun.
The last thing Matthew heard as he left the Common Room was a joke from Cedric, saying 'Matty' was trying to be a good student.
The silence at Matthew and Hermione's table was broken when the three Hufflepuff boys approached them, talking in loud whispers. They had decided that if Matthew was going to leave the fun in the Common Room, they'd bring it to him.
"Hey, there's Matty!" Cedric exclaimed in a louder voice than he intended to, earning a 'shush!' from the librarian, Madam Pince. Hermione looked up, annoyed, from her book to see who was causing the disruption. Her irritated expression was quickly wiped away and replaced with a small smile as she noticed who it was. Hermione saw lots of Matthew and his friends over the summer, because of the Granger families visiting each other, and the older Hufflepuff boys coming to visit at the same times.
"What are you three doing here? Madam Pince will kick you out if you're loud here like you are in the Common Room." Matthew stated as Cedric, Tobias, and Andrew all sat down at the table. It was a small circular table so they all had to squish in. Cedric was sitting beside Matthew, so close that their knees touched.
"No one's getting kicked out, Matt. We just wanted to come hang out with you." Tobias stated, reaching across Cedric to gently punch Matthew in the shoulder.
"And hello, Hermione. I see you still like to read." Cedric greeted the younger Gryffindor girl, noticing the book in front of her and the stack beside her.
Hermione nodded. "I see you still like to point out that I like to read." She shot back. All summer long whenever she saw the boys, they'd talk to her about her books and reading habits.
Cedric laughed at the younger girl's comment, his knee bumping into Matthew's as he moved. "How's your first year going?" The boy asked, changing the topic.
"It's alright. Some of the teachers are...questionable. I really like Professor McGonagall though." Hermione replied, not looking up from her book as she spoke.
"Some teachers or one teacher?" Andrew asked, looking over at Matthew, Cedric, and Toby.
"Snape." The four Hufflepuffs said at the same time, causing Hermione to chuckle softly.
"He got upset at Harry Potter in class, and gave us an essay about bezoars." Hermione stated, flipping the page of her book.
"Harry Potter is the reason I have to write that essay?" Matthew scoffed, and shook his head.
"I learned about bezoars back in first year. I can write that essay from memory." Cedric knocked on his head, taking pride in his knowledge of bezoars.
"Write ours for us, then. I barely listen to a single word Snivellus has to say." Toby said to Cedric, and everyone turned to look at him.
"What'd you just call him?" Andrew asked, trying not to laugh. Hermione sat with wide eyes, shocked that Tobias would make fun of a teacher. Matthew and Cedric were both snickering, wanting to know how the dark haired boy came up with a nickname like that.
"Snivellus. My mum went to school with him, and that's what she and her friends called him." Toby explained, not sure why everyone was so shocked. Hermione's eyes went wider, if that was possible, and Matthew held an expression that was similar.
"Your mum went to school with Professor Snape?" The blonde asked, taken aback by this new found information.
Toby shrugged, acting casual. "Guess so." He replied.
"We're coming to your house for Christmas break." Matthew said, wanting to hear stories about Snape from Tobias' mother.
