Matthew's first official day at Hogwarts was coming to a close, and the first year boy found himself sitting in one of the large leather chairs in the library, watching drops of rain roll down the window like tears.
A History of Magic textbook sat open in Matthew's lap as he tried to keep his eyes open, slowly flipping through the pages that were assigned to read for tonight.
The first day at Hogwarts had been a success, but Matthew was now the most exhausted he thinks he's ever been. Running from class to class and listening intently to the professors that taught him today was quite draining, and all Matthew wanted to do was crawl into his soft yellow quilted bed. However, the small amount of homework he had kept the boy awake at least for another half an hour, before all the students were expected to be back in their common rooms.
Even though Matthew hardly had any homework, he had a hard time focusing on it and getting everything done. His mind kept wandering back to moments he'd experienced in the day, still not being able to wrap his mind around the fact that he was finally at Hogwarts. He had heard so many stories from his father, now Matthew was making his own memories that would one day be stories for any future children he might have.
One of those stories would be his friend getting hit in the face by a broomstick in their first flying lesson. Matthew chuckled softly to his self as he thought about the look on Toby's face once he had been wacked.
"Something funny?" A voice asked behind Matthew, causing him to turn quickly in his seat. Cedric was standing a few feet behind him, a brown book bag slung over one shoulder.
"Oh, I was just thinking about something that happened today." Matthew replied, turning back around. He watched the older boy walk over to the other leather chair, pointing to it with the hand that wasn't holding the strap of his bag.
"Do you mind if I sit?" Cedric asked, sitting down before Matthew had a chance to reply.
The boy shook his head as he mumbled, "no, not at all."
"Do you do that a lot?" Cedric began unpacking his bag, not seeing the confused expression Matthew flashed at him.
"Do what a lot?"
"Laugh at the thoughts in your head." Cedric said, looking up at Matthew with a small smile.
"I dunno. I don't really notice it." Matthew shrugged, now thinking if he did laugh at himself often or not.
"I'm kidding. We all have habits we don't notice. Like, for me, when I'm doing homework I hum a lot and I never noticed until someone told me to shut up." Cedric explained before dropping a small stack of two textbooks down on the table that rested in between the two chairs.
"Is that why you came to the library? To give your friends some peace and quiet?" Matthew was at the library mainly because he wanted to give himself a tour of the castle, and thought the large windows would be nice to sit in front of. He had seen Cedric with his friends on his way out of the Hufflepuff Common Room.
"No, I actually came here to give myself some peace and quiet. The common room started getting a bit rowdy with back to school celebrations." Cedric replied. He had gotten all of his homework organized while talking, so Matthew thought it'd be best to leave him alone to get something done. Both boys came to the library to get some work done, and Matthew didn't want to disrupt that.
"Being at Hogwarts is something to celebrate." Matthew said quietly before turning his attention back to his History of Magic textbook.
The peaceful sounds of rain and thunder filled the room, both Hufflepuff boys focusing on the homework they were assigned. Matthew felt comfortable sitting in Cedric's presence without a single word being said between them. The soft hums from the older boy didn't bother him in the slightest. In fact, the muffled tune made him feel more relaxed.
Cedric and Matthew had been so focused in their homework that they hadn't noticed what time it was until the librarian, Madam Pince, was coming to tell them they had to head back to their Common Room.
"Time flies when you're having fun." Cedric joked as he closed his Potions textbook. After packing up all their belongings, Cedric and Matthew walked back to the Common Room together. The back to school celebrations had apparently been put to bed, because the boys were met with silence when they entered the Common Room.
"I've still got a bit of work to finish." Cedric pointed out, walking over to one of the plushy yellow armchairs.
"Alright. Well, I guess I'll see you tomorrow then." Matthew said before a large yawn escaped him.
Cedric chuckled as Matthew attempted, and failed, to conceal his yawn. "Goodnight."
"Night, Cedric." Matthew replied before lazily heading upstairs to his dormitory.
