Author's Note
There's a time jump between this chapter and the previous one. I really want to launch into the series now, and I think you're all impatiently waiting to see the trio and familiar characters!Twelve year old Matthew Granger sat in a compartment on the Hogwarts Express, his younger cousin across from him as the duo waved to their parents who stood on platform nine and three quarters. Matthew was more than excited to be starting his second year at Hogwarts, and even more excited to show his cousin, Hermione, the ropes of everything. She was only just starting at the magical school, but has been reading textbook after textbook ever since she got her acceptance letter on her eleventh birthday.
At first, Matthew was shocked to learn of his cousin's magical abilities. Both her parents are muggles, and Matthew's father was a muggleborn wizard. Magic doesn't run in the Granger family, and the last thing they all expected was for Hermione to end up being a witch.
With a loud whistle from the train, it started moving along the tracks. The platform started getting smaller and smaller as the train drove further away, leaving nothing but small specks of colour that represented the students' families.
"Excited for your first year at Hogwarts?" Matthew asked, turning his attention away from the window and looking at Hermione.
"Kind of, I'm nervous about which house I'm going to be put in. Are you excited for your second year?" Hermione spoke every word with enunciation, claiming it made her appear smarter. Matthew disagreed, thinking all it did was show off her teeth. He never told her that though, and tried to match her level of enthusiasm as he replied.
"Yeah, I am. First year was great, but I'm gonna miss my family." Matthew spent pretty much all summer spending time with his parents, wanting to do as much as they possibly could within the two months. Cedric and Toby had made visits for a few days, Diane and Malcolm Granger happily welcoming both of them into their home. Belle took a great liking to Cedric, always following him around for attention.
"I think I'm gonna have a lot of fun at Hogwarts. I've read so much about it and the classes." Hermione sighed as she looked out the window, her fingers fiddling with a loose thread on her shirt. The young girl looked out the window, impatiently waiting for the train to arrive at the magical school. They still had a long way to go, but Hermione was more than excited.
"I know you're gonna have fun. There isn't a place on Earth like Hogwarts." Matthew told the girl, who just nodded in response. She stared out at the scenery that flashed by, the train moving too fast to see anything clearly. Conversation seized between the Granger children, Hermione's attention focused out the window as Matthew had his head rested against the back of the seat with his eyes closed. One thing he missed already about the summer was being able to sleep in. Even today was an early morning, compared to the usual waking up at ten A.M. that he was used to. Students couldn't sleep in that late at Hogwarts, even on Sundays.
Matthew was tired, and allowed himself to fall asleep on the train. The loud sounds of the wheels rolling down the tracks provided some white noise that managed to calm the boy down. He wasn't woken up until a short boy with a round face and brown hair came bursting into the compartment.
"Have either of you seen Trevor? He's my toad, and I lost him!" The boy exclaimed, his face almost immediately flaring up in embarrassment at his outburst.
"Haven't seen a toad, have you?" Matthew asked, looking at Hermione. The girl shook her head before standing up.
"I'll help you look for, uh, Trevor." Hermione told the boy, who looked on the verge of tears. His nose was red, and his mouth was turned into a frown.
"Well, six eyes is better than four." Matthew also decided to help the boy, understanding how he was feeling. If Matthew lost Enzo or Belle, he'd appreciate any help that was given. The Granger kids left their compartment and started walking the aisle of the train, trying to find the toad. Hermione and the owner of Trevor had gone in the opposite direction of Matthew, the nervous boy explaining that he loses his toad all the time and his grandmother would be furious if he ever failed to find the toad.
Matthew stopped at the occasional compartment, asking it's occupants if they've seen a toad. Of course no one had seen the pet, because who would actually be on the lookout for a toad just casually hopping by?
One compartment in particular caught Matthew's attention, as it held his best friends at Hogwarts. The boy slid the door open, catching the attention of Toby and Cedric. Both boys grinned when they saw Matthew, standing up to greet him.
"Look who it is!" Toby exclaimed, pulling Matthew in for a hug. Toby's changed a lot in the past few months. Not only did his hair get longer, the dark locks being about ear level, he was much more confident and outgoing. Matthew wasn't much of an extrovert, but the boys were helping each other come out of their shells more.
"Hey, I've been sitting with my cousin. It's her first time on the train." Matthew explained, pulling away from Toby before hugging Cedric, who had gotten slightly taller over the summer.
"Good to see you, Matt." The boy spoke, giving Matthew a tight hug.
"I saw you a month ago." Matthew pointed out as the boys pulled away. All three Hufflepuffs sat down, with Matthew beside Toby.
"A month is a long time." Cedric shrugged, his grin never faltering.
All of a sudden, the compartment door slid open. In walked Andrew, his hands full of different snacks and treats from the trolley. Matthew spotted a Chocolate Frog box and reached over to grab it.
"Hey!" Andrew protested against his food being stolen, but let Matthew keep the frog. Toby and Cedric caught on that any of the sweets were fair game, taking their pick on what they wanted. Andrew's pile was nearly half gone, the boy slightly annoyed.
"Sorry, we're hungry." Cedric stated, pulling open package of two Pumpkin Pasties.
"We're on our way to a feast!" Andrew argued, trying to take the Pumpkin Pasties back. Cedric moved back as he laughed, holding the sweet out of his reach.
"This is true, Andrew, but we all know Dumbledore likes to ramble before we can eat. My stomach might start to eat itself." Toby said, a Cauldron Cake in his hand.
"Thanks, Matthew. All because you took my frog." Andrew shook his head as he chuckled before setting the remaining snacks beside him, away from the rest of the boys.
