The Hogwarts Express finally reached it's station, and all returning students found themselves sitting at their house tables in the Great Hall. Nervous and curious first year students, including Matthew's cousin, all stood on the other side of the Great Hall doors, waiting for Professor Minerva McGonagall to let them in. Matthew remembered when he was sorted, not that it was too long ago. Just last year it was him, waiting impatiently to be let into the Great Hall for the first time.

"Is your cousin worried at all about starting at Hogwarts?" Cedric turned to Matthew, trying to start a conversation with the boy.

"A bit. She's worried about which house she'll be put in, but I know she'll do great in any of them." Matthew replied. The only thing that worried him about his cousin is what people would think when they found out she's a muggle-born. Slytherin house in particular would be nasty to her.

"Ravenclaw would be pleased to have her." Toby added, knowing all about how much time Hermione devoted to her studies. Matthew was impressed by how intelligent his cousin was, and had a strong feeling she'd be put in the house of wisdom.

The boys' conversation was cut short when the tall, wooden doors to the Great Hall swung open widely, Professor McGonagall leading a gaggle of first years into the room. Matthew smiled at their faces of admiration as they looked up at the bewitched ceiling, that was identical to the starry sky outside with dozens of candles hanging down.

"There she is." Matthew pointed out Hermione, who's bushy haired head was tilted down as she mumbled to herself, trying to settle her nerves.

"She looks a bit like you." Cedric stated, noticing the similar features between the cousins. Their fathers were brothers, and the gene pool was quite strong.

McGonagall and the first years made it to the front of the hall, where an old and tattered pointed hat sat on a stool. The professor pulled a scroll of parchment out of her emerald green robes, unrolling it and beginning the sorting ceremony.

"Willow Bingham!" A girl with shoulder length dark brown hair and blue eyes approached the stool, and took a seat. The sorting hat was placed upon her head, and only took a few seconds to decide where to put her.

"Ravenclaw!" The mouth of the hat yelled out, before a smiling Willow Bingham made her way to Ravenclaw's table.

"Hermione Granger!" Professor McGonagall called, the small girl nervously making her way to the stool. She briefly glanced around the Great Hall, noticing Matthew in the crowd, before the sorting hat was placed on her head.

Matthew, Cedric, Toby, Andrew, and the Gryffindor table all cheered as Hermione was sorted into Gryffindor, grinning from ear to ear as she made her way over to her house.

"Draco Malfoy," was sorted in Slytherin. His older brother, Orion, was cheering the loudest from his place at the Slytherin table.

The entire Great Hall fell silent as Professor McGonagall called upon "Harry Potter." A skinny boy with messy black hair and black circular glasses made his way to the front of the room. Whispers and murmurs rattled throughout the Great Hall, everyone's eyes focusing on the thin scar above his eyebrow.

"My mum's told me she knew his father when they were at Hogwarts together. They were in the same year." Toby said in a hushed tone to his friends.

"My father was a few years older than him." Matthew replied, remembering the stories he's heard about James Potter always getting in trouble with his friends.

Gryffindor bursted into cheers and applause once Harry Potter was sorted into their house. He made his way over to the table, Matthew feeling unable to take his eyes off of him. It seemed that everyone at Gryffindor table wanted to shake his hand, and Matthew couldn't help but feel bad for the overwhelmed-looking boy.

The sorting continued, more names being called after Potter's. Hufflepuff earned a few new students, who were busy talking to the people that were closest to them. Matthew even watched as the boy who lost his toad on the train, Neville Longbottom, got sorted into Gryffindor.

Once all the first years were sorted and seated at their house tables, the feast began. Matthew was still starving, the chocolate frog from the train ride not being able to curb his hunger. The boy had a smile etched on his face as he piled his plate full of food, happy that he was back at Hogwarts, surrounded by his friends. Little did he know just what the year had in store for him, now that The Boy Who Lived had walked in the door.
