Tobias had been partially accurate on what Hermione's plans for the day were. The two Hufflepuff boys had followed her to the library, only for her to meet up with her friends, Harry and Ron. The trio didn't speak very many words to one another, they just pulled book after book off the shelves with a different expression on each of their faces. Hermione seemed focused, while Ron was bored, and Harry just made it look like he was helping.

"Well, since we're here, I'm going to do my homework." Matthew announced, ignoring the highly uninteresting acts of his cousin. Toby grumbled something about not wanting to spend all day in the library, but sat down with his best friend anyways. The brunette boy propped his chin up on his hand as he looked out the stained glass window, watching the snow fall.

Matthew had been working for about half an hour on his History of Magic essay before Toby started hitting the table, trying to catch his attention.

"Look! They're leaving." The boy announced in a hushed tone, watching the three Gryffindors as they made their way to the library doors.

"Why are you whispering? They probably heard your assault on the table." Matthew said as he repeated Toby's action of hitting the table.

Toby rolled his eyes as he stood up. "Come on, didn't you want to know what Hermione was doing today?"

"Yeah, we figured it out. They're probably just going back to their common room." Matthew replied before turning back to his essay.

"Really? You think those three are just gonna go have a relaxing day in the common room when half the school is empty? Matt! Are you listening to me?" Toby exclaimed, noticing his friend was more preoccupied with writing his essay.

Matthew slammed his quill down, before checking to make sure it wasn't broken. He then gently, but quickly, packed up all of his belongings and stood up.

"Fine, but this better not be a waste of time. I have to finish this essay before Christmas break." The boy declared, leading the way out of the library.

Matthew and Tobias followed Hermione and her two friends through the castle, keeping their distance so they wouldn't get caught. The three first years didn't seem to be doing anything suspicious, and had even led the two boys back to Gryffindor Common Room.

"Someone get Professor McGonagall down here, those three are breaking about fifty school rules. How dare they go back to their common room!" Matthew hissed out, casting Toby an annoyed look. "I'm going to our common room." He mumbled before walking away from the boy with dark hair.

"I'm sorry, Matt." Toby said, following after his best friend. The two boys walked in silence back to the Hufflepuff Common Room, and Matthew flopped down on one of the plush couches as soon as he was inside.

Matthew took his stuff out of his bag before continuing to work on the History of Magic essay that was due in a few days. There was less than a week left until students boarded the scarlett Hogwarts Express and left the castle for Christmas break.

"Now you're not talking to me?" Toby asked, sitting down beside Matthew as he worked. The blonde nudged him in the ribs with his elbow, signifying that Toby was in his way.

"No, I'm just a bit busy." Matthew replied. All of a sudden, a frantic tapping noise filled the air and pulled Matthew away from his essay. "Can you stop doing that?"

Toby looked over at him with a confused expression. "I'm not doing anything." Then, the noise reached Toby's ears as well. "What is that?" He asked.

Matthew stood up off the couch, momentarily abandoning his essay. He looked around the room to try and find the source of the scratchy, thumping noise. "I think it's coming from upstairs." The boy stated, heading up the stairs towards the male dormitories.

Toby followed him cautiously, in case the source of the noise was something they didn't want to encounter. The banging was getting louder, and Matthew stopped just outside his and Toby's dormitory. He grabbed the brass doorknob, glancing at Toby before slowly opening the door.

The boys walked into the room, only to see an owl outside their window. It was banging one of it's long, brown wings against the glass with an envelope tied to one leg. The owl stopped banging as soon as it noticed Matthew and Toby had entered the room.

"That's my mum's owl." Toby exclaimed, rushing over to the window. The owl gracefully flew inside, landed on the windowsill, and stuck it's leg out. Toby untied the yarn, before reaching over to gently pet the owl atop it's head. Toby thanked the owl just as it hooted and flew out the window.

"What does it say?" Matthew asked, walking over to peer over the curly haired boy's shoulder. He ripped open the tan envelope, before pulling out a single piece of parchment.

Toby felt his heart sink as his brown eyes absorbed every last inked word. Matthew didn't read the letter, he just stood there and stared at his best friend, waiting for him to say something.

"What's wrong?" The boy asked as Toby folded the parchment.

"You and Cedric can't come to my house for Christmas." He replied, looking up at Matthew with glossy eyes that threatened to let tears fall. Matthew furrowed his brows in confusion, silently asking for clarification. "My mum doesn't want the company...she...she was diagnosed with cancer last week."
