I ran as fast as I could through the streets of Coralon, the winter breeze blowing roughly against my skin. I wrapped my coat tightly around me as I weaved my way through the crowd.
It was nearly six in the afternoon and the streets were already packed. I stole a glance behind me, gasping when I saw the familiar golden armor. "Stop!!" One of them yelled. "Yeah right...." I muttered, sliding under a wooden stall.
As I ran by some commoners, they stared confusedly at me. "H-hello princess..." a lady with a tray of apples said. "Hey!" I paused. "Can I borrow this for a second?" I didn't even bother to wait for an answer. I grabbed a few apples and threw them at my pursuers.
"Eat that guards!" I smirked as an apple knocked one in the head. They all growled before chasing me again.
I ran even faster through the streets, trying to get away from the guards. It was Saturday, a few weeks into winter and I decided to have some fun. I was cooped up in the castle for too long, signing papers and meeting with royal business makers. It had been too long since I had an adventure.
I'm drawing too much attention, I thought, noticing everyone else's puzzled looks. Suddenly, I used my air powers to blast myself onto a nearby building. "Good luck finding me now!" I smiled triumphantly as the guards below me looked around frantically.
I strolled peacefully on the roof, enjoying the refreshing winter air for the first time in forever. The silent moment gave me sometime to think. Last week was my birthday. My seventeenth birthday. It had to be one of the most exciting birthdays I had ever experienced.
All of my family members were there, celebrating my birthday together. Marco, Jodie and the twins even stopped by the castle to hang out with us. It was amazing.
"They should be gone by now..." I mumbled as I jumped down into a more isolated part of town. It brought back memories of when I first ran away from home. The gloomy alley was dark, making it feel like eyes were watching me, but since summer I had grown accustomed to the streets of Coralon.
I made a left turn and walked towards a familiar wooden house.
Marco's house.
~{*}~
"Honey~ Im home!" I exclaimed, bursting into the house. I didn't have to knock or wait for them to open the door, I knew they would have let me in anyways. "Crystal!" Marco and Jodie jumped from their seats and rushed over to me.
"Hey guys," I said as I took off my fluffy pink coat. "Glad you could make it," Jodie said. "The first match of The Battle of Elementals is tonight and we CAN'T afford to miss it." We sat in the comfy couches, a plate of wings already on the table- which I helped myself to.
"I-I actually thought you wouldn't bother to come.... since you have your princess duties," Marco scratched his head awkwardly, his face showing some sign of embarrassment. I was slightly shocked. Why would he ever think that?
Out of instinct I grabbed a chicken wing and threw it at his face, the sauce leaving a mark on his cheek. "I would never abandon you guys!" I yelled angrily. "Plus, I've been meaning to practice my fighting moves. The last time I actually fought was......"
"Back with your uncle?" Jodie asked sympathetically. "Yeah."
"How's your family holding up?" Marco asked. "Fine.... I guess," I hugged my arms, my eyes glued to the ground. "They say it's okay, but I'm starting to regret leaving him in my mind. Just the thought of him in there creeps me out." "You did what you had to do," Marco sighed.
I sat in thought for a moment. It was pretty scaring knowing that someone was trapped in my mind. Although he was still stuck in that iceberg I froze over him, who knows what Damian could have been planning next. The worst part was that I couldn't do anything about it.
I hated feeling vulnerable, but what my uncle said was true. I couldn't enter that weird mind space without him. Suddenly, Jodie's harsh voice snapped me back to reality. "Enough with this sappy stuff! Let's get ready for the fight." The moment she hastily went to her room, the front door flew open.
Then I saw their messy dark hair and bright eyes; one sapphire blue and one as green as nature itself. "...dude I kno- OH MY GOSH! Crystal!!" Bill exclaimed. The twins dashed towards me and tackled me in a tight hug.
"We haven't seen you since your birthday!" Gill said, squeezing my neck even harder. "I can't believe my little baby's growing up!" "Get off me, you monkeys!" I growled annoyedly as I shoved them off. "And I'm not a baby. I'm seventeen!"
"Yep. Almost at adult hood," Jodie said, stepping out from her room. She had on a brown backpack and her dark hair was in a high ponytail. "The year of unwanted responsibilities and bad decisions!"
"C'mom, we don't wanna be late," Gill said as we all stepped outside into the backyard, back to the familiar spot that covered the secret entrance. "Your parents do know we're still taking you to these things, right?" Marco asked.
I grinned mischievously. "Nope!"
