Chapter 11
EVE
A close watch was kept on Eseosa. If she coughed, we would all rush to her. Eyare, his mum and I would anxiously rush to her side, peering at her worriedly.
Her wan complexion turned healthy and she grew bigger and began making intelligible noises.
She began to recognise us, following us with her eyes and smiling.
Eyare would carry her and sing to her. She'd laugh as he made funny faces.
I got all the rest I needed. It got to the point I began putting on weight once again just like when I was pregnant, and why wouldn't I, when I was constantly plied with good finger-licking soups. I just couldn't resist eating them all.
Eyare joked with me, saying if I kept up with my eating habits, I wouldn't be able to pass through the door. My love for him grew stronger to the point I hoped I wasn't more in love with him than he was with me.
I began noticing the little quirks that I hadn't noticed about him before. The way he'd jog to the bathroom every time he needed to pee, the way he'd throw back his head with abandon when he laughed. The slow, methodical pace at which he ate --- he was a picky eater. He would cut his meat and chicken into little pieces and put Eseosa on his lap and begin feeding her tiny bits with his hands. I didn't like that. I felt she was still too young for solid foods, but since our baby showed her love for it, I let it be, but kept a keen eye out on her for any negative reaction.
The love making was whew! It was like our souls blended into one whenever we touched. One evening, he came back from a stroll and met me in the compound, playing with Eseosa. He kissed me on the forehead and carried Eseosa in to his mum. Coming back out, he took me by the hand and told me to take a walk with him. He led me outside the compound and we walked on for a bit, all the while holding unto my hand.
I looked enquiringly at him but said nothing, just trusting him. It became dark, but the moon cast some light on our path way, illuminating it, thereby making it easier for us to see. We come across a grassland not far from the house, but completely secluded from public eye. There, he sat me down and removed both our flip flops. I breathed in the clean, fresh air, then I paused as I sniffed the air. There was something different about the smell here, it smelt. . .
That was when I saw it.
A beautiful lake. It was still and unmoving. It was so peaceful that I sighed wistfully. I turned to look at Eyare and saw him smiling at me. He shimmied closer and linked our fingers. His head dipped towards mine, eyes dropping to my lips. And that was when I saw movement from the corner of my eye.
My head whipped towards the lake.
Ripples flit across it as little fish began jumping out on cue, as if waiting for our arrival. They dived in and out, causing swirls to appear on the surface of the lake.
