Chapter 12
EYARE'S MOTHER - QUEEN MOTHER.
Intuition.
An in-built meter that never malfunctions.
My mother's intuition was seriously wagging.
Immediately I got into the room, I knew something was wrong. She was huddled in one corner, clutching a picture to her chest.
Her stare was glassy and unwavering. Her phone lay at her feet. It kept ringing, yet she was oblivious to it. I stood looking at her for some time. I had never particularly liked her, not that she was a bad person or a criminal, or anything, but the last time Eyare came visiting, he had said in not so many words they weren't seeing eye to eye, mainly because she was always hiding thingsb. . . or something along those lines.
What I do know, though, is something seemed off, like she was hiding a secret. I always watched her when they were together. She, Eyare and the baby. She always had this far away look on her face.
What, dear young lady, have you been up to?
What secrets do you have hidden in the recesses of your mind?
I hope for my son's sake, it's nothing damaging. I don't know how much more I can take after the scare we had with baby Eseosa.
I crouched before her, coming eye to eye with her, yet she remained unmoved. She must really be far away. I had to get her attention, so I cleared my throat. "Ahem!"
She looked startled for a minute, and then recognition slowly took over her features. "Mum!" She licked her lips and struggled to get up, but I stayed her, gently pushing her back down. She lowered herself back to the floor and suddenly took an interest in it.
I took the picture she was clutching to her chest and looked at it. It was a picture of Eyare and Eseosa. He was smiling down at her as he held her in his arms. The picture was taken without him knowing. One of those special moments captured forever.
It was beautiful.
I would literally fight anyone that took the happiness away from my son. He was the only one I had. I wouldn't stand to see him broken, just like his father. I shrugged away my thoughts and stood up frowning. I turned to her, about to give her a good warning, but what I saw stopped me in my tracks.
Her arms were folded around her body and she was shaking and crying silently, so I dropped back down to the ground with some effort, my old bones creaking in protest, and pulled her close to me. Whatever was worrying her must be bad to get a reaction like this. I couldn't bring myself to say a harsh word to her, not in this state. Instead, I led her to the bed and sat her down and she clung to me until her tears subdued gradually. I cleaned them with the edge of my wrapper.
I knew if I asked her, she wouldn't tell me and I was quite sure my son knew nothing of this either. But I needed to get to the bottom of it. I had said nothing to Eyare at the festival when the wise woman had mysteriously appeared and uttered those ominous words. I didn't want to upset him, but history will not repeat itself, I wouldn't allow it to. What nobody knew was, the wise woman had actually come to the house to see my late husband. She had said some pretty disturbing words, but we hadn't listened to her. We shrugged it off as the ramblings of an old woman.
Big mistake!
I paid the grave price of turning deaf and dumb with my late husband's political problems. I wouldn't do same with my son, I wouldn't loose him too. I made up my mind on what to do. "My daughter, I do not know what is disturbing you, but it must be really bad for you to get this way. I wouldn't ask you what the issue is, but I want to tell you that you need to tell your husband about it. After all, two heads are better than one and he is your husband. He deserves to know."
