Hi guys, when I was writing this story, I didn't think for once it would be a story about an heir to the throne. Truth is, as I write, inspiration comes to me.
My Edo name is actually Osagiede and I decided to use it for my female character. No, I'm not married yet, neither would I do what she did to my husband, like at all. Lol.
So inspiration struck me to make Eyare as the next king or Oba, if you like.
So here are a few truths about the Oba of Benin and how powerful he is:
1.) The Oba of Benin is seen as the most powerful man in Benin and possibly, in the whole of Nigeria.
A lie, you say?
Well, he once left former President Good luck Jonathan sitting and waiting for him for about fifteen minutes. Even then, he never came out.
A court messenger was sent to former president Goodluck to tell him to meet with the Oba in his private chambers due to circumstances beyond his control.
2.) When he is seen in public, he always has a white handkerchief covering his mouth, same with his wives.
3.) When the Oba of Benin speaks, his word is law.
4.) The oba of Benin has never been seen in a church, kneeling down before any pastor.
Matter of fact, the palace has a shrine where the Oba worships his deities.
5.) It is said that if the oba is angry with you and goes into his inner chamber and comes out wearing his red toga or garment, otherwise known as 'ododo', and if he curses you out, still wearing that garment, there is no way in the world that you can get rid of that curse.
That is why the yoruba's acknowledge him in their cognomen as 'Afinju Oba Ado Otolu Apara Oro Pupa bi odide'. This means 'the gutsy Benin king that is as powerful as the thunder who wears the red, like the magical tail feathers of the parrot'.
Well then, let's hail the great king in my language. 'Oba gha tokpere', meaning: 'All hail the king, Amen'.
Proudly Edo - Delta 😊
