Tears clouded her vision as she drove to the Babalola's mansion. Antonio had promised to make her suffer and she knew each day of their married life would be hell for her. She thought about the incident at church...her brothers and sisters bathing her in cold words broke her heart.
"Lord, I'm sorry for talking back to them in that manner. What was I expecting? They only said what was in their mind and they were right. You did say we should not marry anyone who has not given their lives to you for it is an open door for the enemy. What should I do? Should I leave the country? Should I place my parents' fears over trusting your Word?"
She remembered Antonio's bone chilling words and she began to mutter to herself, "I will bear it. I have to bear it."
She was so lost in thought and heavily burdened that she nearly hit the car in front of her. It was not a busy road but other drivers blared their horns at her.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." She said aloud and wiped her face with her hands.
Tough luck.
She suddenly realized whose car she nearly sent to the Panel beaters...Antonio's.
"Oh God, he's not even stopping to yell at me. He's on his way to his parents' house too. Maybe he would do all the yelling there."
They arrived at the mansion almost at the same time. Funmi quickly packed at an empty space in the big parking lot of the compound and stepped out quickly to apologise to Antonio. But Antonio was already on his way to her. Before she could say a word, he pulled her violently by the hand to a side of the property that was not so open to anyone that is inside.
"Antonio, you are hurting me," She began to say.
He stopped and slapped her hard across the face.
"You took away my happiness and now you want to take my life, you witch?"
Funmi rubbed her hand on her affected cheek as tears began to flow from her eyes.
"Why do you hate me all of a sudden? We were friends before all this happened! What have I done to you?"
Antonio felt no remorse as he watched tears run down her face and at the sight of his hand print on her cheek.
"I once heard you had a crush on me growing up and that is the more reason to believe this is all a set up to achieve your aim. You will never have me Funmi! I can't wait to marry you Funmi because that is the ticket to my freedom." He stared her down and left, still fuming with anger.
Funmi broke down into fresh tears and sat on a bench nearby to gather herself and clean up before going in. Nobody should see her like this.
"Can you imagine someone asking me if my precious Funmi is pregnant?" Mrs. Olanrewaju declared in irritation.
