“So Alanna, how are you feeling?” Dr. Skeemer asked me.

“Not too well, actually. I’ve been feeling a tad bit nacious this morning.” I told him, a frown appearing on my lips.

The doctor nodded and scribbled something down on his clipboard. "We will need an MRI scan from you today. Go ahead and get comfortable on that bed by the MRI scanner, and I'll get everything prepared. You'd like to be sedated, correct?"

I nodded. "Yes, please. You know how I get nervous and flip out in those things." A small, nervous laugh escaped my lips. I climbed onto the uncomfortable hospital bed and settled in. Placing my hands on my stomach, I closed my eyes as I felt Dr. Skeemer readying the sedation process. First, he disinfected the area in which the needle was about to punture. He then filled the syringe with a clear liquid before stabbing my arm with the sharp needle. I didn't even flinch at the feeling. My eyes began to droop in only a few minutes, and before I knew it, I was knocked completely out of it.

I peeled my eyes open to find myself facing the same, boring old room I've been in for the last two months. Just as I sat up in my bed, Nurse Carter walked in with a folder in her hand. She sent me a sad look as Dr.Skeemer followed her into the room.

"Alanna, we have some bad news. Even after all the progress you made, the tumor started to grow back. You'll need surgery in three weeks, for we have to watch the progression and speed of growth." The grey-haired doctor told me. A single tear fell down my cheek.

"Hey Alanna, how'd the check-up go?" Poppy pranced into the room, smiling and giggling. The second she saw my expression, her smile faded and a tear came to her eye. "W-What happened?"

"The tumor came back..." My voice trailed of at the end. I've known for two and a half months that I could die anyday now, that my body could give up it's fight and let the tumor slowly take over my senses. I wasn't about to let that happen. There was no way in hell that I was giving up to some stupid tumor.

Dr.Skeemer cleared his throat. "I'll leave you be. You're next check-up is next Friday, Alanna." He then turned on his heel and marched out of the room.

Poppy leapt into my arms. "Alanna, it's your birthday tomorrow and this is what you get? I'm so sorry. I have to go pack, though. I'm being released today and heading back to London. I'll miss you so, so much." She hugged me tighter. "Help me pack?" Her voice was pleading. I gave in right away and climbed out of bed. We marched out of my room and across the hall into hers. Empty boxes were thrown about. I swear, Poppy's room held almost and entire household worth of stuff. I pressed play on her ipod dock and music came blaring through the speakers. Thank goodness for sound proof rooms!

We spent the next hour dancing, singing and laughing in her room while packing. When everything was in a box, labelled and sealed, we collapsed onto her bed. "Finally!" She cheered as her head found the soft, plush pillow that remained unpacked and on the foot of the bed.

"I'm going to miss you so much." I stated.

Poppy let out a loud sigh. "Me too. My mom'll be here in ten minutes to pick up my stuff, along with my body and brain."

"Awwww, I was hoping she's leave the brain!" I joked, causing the two of us to burst out laughing. A knock sounded at the door.

"Come in!" Poppy called, still lying on the bed. Her mom pushed open the door and smiled to me.

"Hello, Alanna. I've come to get Poppy, do you mind helping packing the car?" Sarah, Poppy's mom, asked me. I nodded and stood from my spot. With all my strength, I lifted a heavy box from the desk in the corner and started walking towards the car. Sarah and Poppy followed, each taking the same sized boxes as I took.  We walked back and forth with boxes. Finally, I placed the last box in the boot of the car and slammed the door shut. Poppy gave me a warm embrace, tears spilling from underneath her thick lashes. A few tears escaped my eyes as well.

"I'll miss you so, so, so much." Poppy cried into my shoulder.

Returning the gesture, I sniffled, "Me too. Have fun in London." I pulled away hesitantly. "I should get going, as should you. Call me when you get there?" She nodded and climbed into the passenger seat of their dark blue toyota corolla. As they drove away, Poppy waved out the window. The car disappeared down the road. I turned on my heel and wandered aimlessly through the hospital halls. I already felt lonely without my best friend here.
