"Happy Birthday!" My mom squealed as she ran towards me. "I've got you a present!"
I groaned. "Mom, it's not even ten o'clock yet, and I have a headache. Quiet down a bit?" She nodded after pretending to zip her lips. "Thanks." I muttered.
"It's one of the things you wanted.." She whispered as she placed a Sally's Wigs and More bag on my lap. I smiled at her and ribbed the bag in my need to see it. Inside was a beautiful brown-haired wig with soft curls and side bangs. "It's expensive, too." My mom spoke as I stood and put it on, looking in the mirror across the room. It looked real. Really real.
"Thank you so much, mama!" I shrieked, wrapping her up in a huge hug.
"I thought you had a headache?" Her eyebrows raised.
A giggle left my mouth. "I lied. You were just being really loud." I smiled.
A knock came from the door before it opened. "Hello Alanna, Happy Birthday!" Nurse Carter hugged me. "Now, we have a special guest visiting patients today. You'll need to be here when they come, yes?"
I nodded. She added, "Oh, and here is your gift." The nurse handed me a small bag. Opening it, I saw a little box. I pulled out the black, velvet case. My finger flipped open the heavy lid, and revealed three beautiful necklace. The first one was a diamond Brain Tumor Awarness ribbon. The second chain held a ring that had the words hope, love and strength around it, all three separeated by little ribbons that were engraved into the metal. The third was my favorite. It had a little silver dog-tag sort of thing on it. Engraved in the metal were the words, 'Keep fighting and stay strong. -Nurse Carter' on one side. On the other, 'You can do anything put in your way. -Dr.Nielson'
A tear rolled down my cheek as I read the engravings. "Thank you, so much." I held the woman in scrubs for a minute before pulling away.
"Your welcome. Now, you need plenty of rest if you want to see the special visitors this afternoon. I'll wake you when it's time. Mrs.Kyles, could you let your daughter rest?" Nurse Carter informed both my mom and I.
"Yes, of course. I'll see you later, darling." My mom kissed my forehead before walking out of the room with the nurse.
************
"Alanna, dear, it's time to wake up." A distant, female voice spoke.
I groaned. "Already?" My eyelids fluttered open and I spotted Nurse Carter in the doorway.
"Yes, you've slept for a few hours. Now get ready, and look decent, please." She told me.
"What? I don't look good already?" I teased.
Letting out a laugh, my nurse replied. "Not with your wig sideways and your pajamas on!" She then sauntered out of the room, closing the door on her way out. I forced myself out of bed and to the dresser. I pulled out a British flag croptop, a pair of ripped blue jeans and my red TOMS. At a fast pace, I pulled the clothes on and placed my i-phone, with a Superman case, into my front pocket. Carefully, I placed the engraved dogtag necklace around my neck. A knock sounded at the door just as I started fixing the wig onto my head.
"Yes?" I called.
Nurse Carter's voice sounded. "Are you ready, darling?" She asked.
"Just about." I replied. Quickly I finished fixing my wig, and it looked great. "Come in!" The door swung open and in walked somebody. It sounded like a heard of elephants. I turned to talk to my nurse. "What would you like, Carter?" I said, not even noticing five smiling boys as I wandered over to my mirror. "Nurse Carter, when are the 'special visitors' going to be here?" After she didn't reply, I turned around to see if she was still in the room. Instead of spotting the blond nurse, I spotted five boys, two holding looks of confusion, and the other three obviously attempting to supress a laugh.
"Whose Carter?" One tanned british boy asked.
"Y-y-your..." My voice came out in a stutter. The heat flooded to my face and I felt myself blush.
"One Direction? Yes. That doesn't matter right now. Who's Carter?" Zayn Malik repeated.
"My nurse..." I spoke hesitantly. My finger pressed down on the microphone I had to talk to Nurse Carter. "Carter, why is One Direction in my room?" My voice went through the microphone, and through the speaker I heard a reply.
"I told you we had special visitors, Alanna. Plus, be happy, it's your birthday." My nurse replied.
"You're a patient?" Harry Styles asked, looking shocked.
I laughed. "Yes, I am. Why are you surprised about that? You walked into a hospital room, for goodness sake!"
"You don't look like a patient. You're wearing normal clothes, but the other's are wearing gowns. You have a full head of hair, and all the other patients are either bald or balding." He replied calmly.
"Me? With hair?" A loud laugh escaped my lips. "C'mon, it doesn't look THAT real!"
"That's not real?" Harry pointed to my hair. I shook my head, suppressing the rest of my laughter.
Suddenly, Louis Tomlinson spoke up. "Can I feel it?" Was he really as random as everyone thought he was in the tabloids? I suppose so...
"Uh.... why?" I hesitated.
"It's soft!" He screamed while starting to pet my head. I winced at the loud noise, which started a headache. My hand reached out and picked up the microphone.
"It's a thumper." I muttered into the mic.
"I'll be right there." Nurse Carter replied quickly. This was going to be a long day.
