SHOVING HIS HANDS INTO his pockets, Gilbert Blythe shook his head and looked to the ground — making his way back to the train station. The boy felt immense stupidity as he played the event over and over in his head. How could he have ever thought Samantha Darling would forgive him? He was so naive to think that he had a chance to get her back.

The boy then thought back to the day the two said goodbye to one another when he left for Trinidad. Gilbert hadn't known that was the last time he would truly see her. If he had, he would have held her tighter and never let her go. It was then the two had shared their last moment together.

Their last moment happy together.

Taking one look back, Gilbert Blythe spotted Samantha Darling across the bay, standing near the ship whilst discussing something with the sailor. Her blue skirts dancing in the breeze, Gilbert watched her blonde hair blow past her porcelain features.

She would fit right in with her family hen she returned to London. Samantha Vanderbilt would be the most beautiful, luxurious lady in all of England — maybe in all of the world. She didn't belong in Avonlea, she was born to be royal.

Gilbert knew had done something that he would regret for the rest of his life. He had single handedly ruined his relationship with Samantha by kissing another girl, whom he hadn't had any feelings for whatsoever. He had made a mistake; a mistake that he would never be able to take back.

Even if the kiss wasn't the reason she left, how could Samantha possibly choose him over living a life of luxury in London, England? She would have had to be incredibly dim-witted to stay in Avonlea when she had her whole life planned out for her out there.

Making his way up to the train conductor, Gilbert spoke softly, "One ticket back to Avonlea, please."

After a brief pause, the conductor glanced down at the boy with confusion flashing in his light grey eyes.

"Didn't you say you would be accompanying a girl?" The conductor replied, hesitantly taking the money Gilbert had handed him.

"No," Gilbert breathed, shaking his head shamefully. "It's just me."

The conductor gave the boy a sad smile. Throughout the train ride, Gilbert Blythe had ranted to the man about his love for a certain blonde girl named Samantha Darling. The conductor had wished him luck, but it turned out that wasn't of much help.

"Here you go, boy," The conductor spoke, handing Gilbert his train ticket and tilting his hat with pity.

As the man shuffled away, Gilbert turned once again towards the docks in the distance. If there was any hope left then, it was all gone now. Though his view was minimal, he could see the ship sailing away in the distance.
