IN HER OPINION, SAMANTHA WAS SURE THE SECOND DAY OF SCHOOL WITH Miss Stacy would be even better than the first. As the girl hung up her scarf in the cloakroom, she found that the tables were already pushed aside; the students seating themselves on the floor once again. Turning to the brunette-haired boy beside her, Samantha smiled and pointed to the empty space in the corner, "Do you want to sit over there?"

Scratching the back of his neck, Gilbert replied, "I'd love to, but I am going to sit up next to Miss Stacy. I have to study hard if I want to be a doctor, ay?"

Samantha Darling tried her best to hide the hurt in her eyes, so she flashed the boy a smile, "Of course, I understand."

With an appreciative "thank you", Gilbert Blythe let go of Samantha's hand; shuffling away to Miss Stacy. Letting out a sigh, Samantha turned to the rest of the class, who arranged themselves into small groups. Searching faces, Samantha noticed that Charlie, one of her best friends, was sitting alone. Making her way over to him, Samantha bent down and questioned, "Charlie, what's wrong?"

Meeting his eyes with hers, Charlie shook his head and muttered, "Nothing, I'm okay."

"Are you sure? You don't look so good."

"I promise, I'm okay," Charlie assured the girl, trying to keep a straight face until, finally, it fell. This was how Samantha knew he was going to tell the truth. "It's just...why doesn't Cole come to school anymore?"

"Oh," Samantha spoke, quite taken aback, blinking a few times. "Um...he just didn't really like it here and-"

"I know why he left, he told me the whole story."

He did?

"Do you miss him?"

Rubbing his hands on his face, Charlie shook his head and faked a smile, "No, I'm okay."

"Charlie, you already said that," Samantha pointed out, her gaze softening.

"Samantha, I'm fine," His voice, normally sweet, was now hardened. It was like he was trying to hide something from her. "Just...leave me alone."

Once again, the girl was taken aback by his actions. But, she respected Charlie and she knew that it would be best if she let him be by himself. So, Samantha stood, making her way over to her group of friends without a word.

"Good morning," Samantha greeted as she took a seat in between Jane Andrews and Clara Mackenzie.

"Samantha," Clara called with a smile. "We missed you on the walk to school today. Your friend Andrew said he liked Ruby's bow this morning, and now she can't stop talking about him."

Across from Samantha sat Ruby Gillis, whose cheeks seemed to be almost as red as a cherry. With her head tilted at an angle, the petite blonde stared dreamy-eyed at the blonde boy across the room, who was currently in conversation with Moody. A soft smile appeared on her face as she noticed this. Samantha Darling was happy that Ruby was moving on. She deserved someone that would care about her just as much as she cared about him.
