Written for the wonderful @InsomniacArtist ! I apologize for this taking so long to publish, I went on this sort of writer's block session. I'm back at it now!

_____

With Cuphead trying his hardest to save himself and his brother, the young boy was prone to get cut up quite a few times. These signers were no easy task, that was undoubted. The way he came home daily with an array of different scars in different places was close to disturbing. Each time he gave you the same bright, admirable smile that he always wore. "Don't worry about me, doll!" He would giggle, and sometimes give you a big hug once he was finished being patched up, handiwork being done by his one and only.

"Once I get all these contracts, everything will be a-okay. No more worries!"

Even with all the bruises he brought home each and every day, you nursed each one to the best of your abilities. You believed in Cuphead. Sure, he was reckless, and maybe a tad overconfident in his abilities that would contrast how he came home every day, but you knew one thing for sure. He was determined. The drive to save his brother and himself, and potentially the rest of Inkwell Isle was higher than any average Joe.

And as he headed out the door with his brother Mugman the next day, you hugged and waved them both farewell and good luck on their seemingly endless journey. They always told you that they were close and that they would be done soon... But it truly looked like what they were trying to do never came to an end. Saying that you worried for the boys was an understatement. They'd gotten perks along with their finger guns, that just made them stronger. Sometimes you'd give them a few coins if they needed them urgently but.. the outcome was indifferent.

So instead of sitting at home, with worrying about them becoming a part of your routine, heading out to explore was your plan for the day. The plan was to take your mind off of the two brothers getting hurt, Cuphead more so since he was injury prone. Sitting along the lovely docks of the most distant Inkwell Isle, you talked to Cala Maria and a few of her comrades. They talked of life among the waters, how things were under the sea and the downsides of having to be up on the land most of the time. It was a refreshing conversation. It drove negative thoughts of your boys away.

And that was okay with you.

The day went on without a care in the world from you, but there was still that small voice in your head that would remind you every once in a while that Cuphead would be returning home with even more bruises...

"SOMEBODY! HELP! Please help!"

That voice could be heard from the entirety of the Isles. It caused panic to swell within your small body. The shrill call for help made your heart beat fast, your hands twitch in anticipation and nervousness, the suddenness of the call making an intimidating sort of heat to swell in the back of your throat and stomach.

Your heart dropped when they called a second time, the voice sounding all too familiar. It was Mugman. His voice quavering and giving the impression that he was on the verge of breaking into a loud sob.

Your nursely instincts shifted into high-gear. There was no way you would let some random debtor get the best of your boys. There was absolutely no way...

Your attempts at positivity had gotten the best of you, so much so, that when you finally found the source of the calls for help, you almost erupt into a fit of tears as well. Mugman had Cuphead on his back, the boy laying limp against his younger brother. Mugman had tears in his eyes, blinking them away and allowing them to roll down his face. Even after all that convincing that he would be okay, and return home to you with that same smile on his face that he had when he left, the outcome did not change.
