As a usual routine after a hard day of work, Gavin is chilling in the break room. He is finishing his last touch on the coffee he has made by adding some sugar. He grabs his cup of coffee then goes to a table not far from him. From the see-through glass window beside him, Gavin looks outside the break room. The station seems quiet although there are people around. It is unusually relaxing and peaceful. Oh, right. Maybe because there is no sign of that annoying android, RK900. Gavin has not seen that android since noon.
'Where the heck did that piece of plastic go?' Gavin wonders.
Ah, who cares anyway. What matters for Gavin right now is his alone time with his perfect cup of coffee.
"Detective Reed," just when Gavin thinks he can enjoy his private time, a police officer interrupts him before he got a chance to take a sip of his coffee, "Captain Fowler is calling for you."
Never mind then.
Gavin goes out the break room immediately, leaving his coffee behind. He makes his way to the Captain's office.
"You want to see me, Captain?"
Captain Fowler nods and points at an empty seat in front of him. Gavin takes the sign and sits right in front of the captain.
"We're getting reports of assaults involving some androids," says Captain Fowler while looking at his computer screen, "I want you to investigate these cases with your partner RK900," hearing that Gavin looks around the room, "He's not here at the moment," phew, thank God, "Don't worry, he'll be here tomorrow morning after his system is checked," goddammit! , "You can start studying the cases from now on if you like."
"Why do I have to investigate with that piece of plastic in every mission? Why can't I do it alone?" Gavin asks.
"Detective, I have told you many times before and this will be the last time I explain it to you", Captain Fowler changes his attention from the computer screen to Gavin, "One of the reasons we need androids as assistance is because they offer the analysis of biological evidence in real time by direct sampling, which means that your partner help you to investigate and cross-checking the evidence faster."
"Can't you at least assign me with another android?" Gavin asks another question.
"Another android?" Captain Fowler seems confused, "In this department we only got 2 units of androids model that are designed to assist human law enforcement; RK900 and RK800 a.k.a Connor."
"Yeah, I know. I know...," Gavin constantly nodding his head, "I'm just saying...maybe I could change partner," Gavin mumbles while fiddling his fingers.
"What are you suggesting, detective?" Captain Fowler doesn't get what Gavin is saying.
"... with Connor," Gavin keeps mumbling.
"Excuse me, you want what?"
"Pair me up with Connor," Gavin repeats himself in clear voice although he seems unsure.
Captain Fowler is staring at Gavin for a while then says, "No."
"Argghh...," Gavin grambles, "Why not?"
"Isn't it obvious? Connor is Hank's partner so he's not available. Besides, if I'm not mistaken you hate him, don't you? You always bully him whenever you meet him. So now why do you want to be his partner?" Captain Fowler got some points.
"Just..," Gavin avoids eye contact with the captain, "Some reasons.."
"What reasons?"
"I can't tell you, Captain.. but I have my reasons.."
"Very well," Captain Fowler folds his arm, "In that case, I also have my reason to fire you for slacking off and disobeying my order."
"What? No!" Gavin does not expect that.
"Then, tell me your reason."
"Okay! Fine! I can't believe I'm gonna say this," Gavin bites his lip before he says, "Connor is better than that RK900."
Captain Fowler frowns, "Did you hear yourself, detective?"
"Yes, I said Connor is better than-"
"Reed, what on earth are you talking about? Your partner is the goddamn RK900!"
"So?"
"You got yourself the best android, damn it!" Captain Fowler raises his tone, "RK900 is the newest model with better features. He's faster, stronger, more resilient, and equipped with the latest technologies. What makes Connor better than him?"
"One thing for sure, Connor is more human than that fucking android!" Gavin blurts out, "Alright, I don't like Connor and I admit that sometimes I tease him a little too far. But at least Connor never aims his gun right at me! Yeah, I tell you that RK900 wouldn't hesitate to shoot me just because I accidentally interrupted him when he was dealing with a suspect."
"Hank aimed his gun at you once but you didn't complain."
"Because I knew that Hank would never really shoot me. He didn't mean it. He was just bluffing to protect Connor. I've known Hank for ages while on the other hand I know nothing about that RK900."
"RK900 didn't shoot you. He was probably startled when you suddenly showed up. He thought that you might be another suspect."
"No.. No, no, no.. From the way he looked at me, I know that he wanted to kill me. He will definitely shoot me one day," remembering the scene sends chills down his spine. Gavin rubs his face trying to calm himself down, "Captain, I don't feel safe when I'm around him and that would affect my work performance. So, please, I beg you...hear me out just this once."
This is the first time Captain Fowler sees Gavin looking so desperate. Although he doesn't like the idea, Captain Fowler decides to listen, "Okay. Whatever you want,"
"Yes!" Gavin cheers up.
"However, you must ask Hank for permission."
"What?" with that Gavin's hope crumbles in a second, "He will never let me!"
"I don't care. Just ask him first. If he doesn't agree then that's your problem and you will be assigned with your original partner. Do we have a deal?"
Gavin immediately slumps against his seat, "Deal..."
