Edward helped me to the car while being very careful of my dress and ugly cast. My now straightened hair kept falling into my eyes. I sighed in annoyance.
"Are you going to tell me what's happening? You know I hate surprises," I said as Edward sped down the high way. Alice did my hair and Rosalie picked out a dress for me to wear.
"You really haven't figured it out?" He asked with a crooked smile. I looked at his attire and then to my maroon dress. "Prom?" I asked. The big event hadn't crossed my mind since I came back from the hospital. I didn't plan on attending. Edward looked damn good in his tux.
"Then why are we going to my house?" I asked noticing that we passed the school. "Charlie wants to see you," he informed me. The sun was still high in the sky. It was a bright day for Forks but not bright enough to cause my boyfriend to sparkle. I couldn't believe he was taking me to prom.
I remembered one night where I laid on Edward's chest and we shared random thoughts about random things. I told him about prom, the way I imagined it to be in my head. I told him about how I wanted a date who would slow dance with me and make me feel like a princess. I know it sounds childish but it's what every girl wanted deep down inside.
When we made it to my house Edward helped me out of the car and onto the front porch. My dad opened the door to greet us he paused for a second when he saw me. "You look so radiant, just beautiful." I wasn't used to my dad using words like "radiant", but it put a smile on my face nonetheless. He turned to Edward and said, "I would say you clean up nice, but you always look like a bar of dove soap." I elbowed my dad in response but I couldn't help but giggle. Edward on the other hand looked confused yet thankful for his backhanded compliment.
We took pictures and I face-timed my mom and she cried a lot. We were then on our way to the big event. I kept looking in the mirror trying to make sure everything was perfect. Edward gave me a small smile "You are no less perfect than the first six times you looked in the mirror."
" I just feel weird. Everything feels so
right. Something is bound to go wrong," I said. "Nothing will go wrong. It's prom. We are going to dance and mingle like normal teenagers. It will be fun," he stated. "Are saying this to me or yourself?" I asked noticing his slight change in tone. "Both," he admitted.
The front door of the prom had been decorated to look like a red carpet. There was a line on the way in. The music from the inside blasted loudly and the chatter of my excited peers in line gave me a little anxiety. The line was moving slow and I looked up and saw a very familiar face, Jacob Black.
I told Edward that I would return in a moment and quickly left his side before he could ask questions.
Jacob wore a long-sleeved white shirt and a tie. It was obvious that he'd put a lot of thought into his attire. His long black hair was pulled into a slick ponytail. He smiled from ear to ear as I made my way towards him.
"I was hoping that you would be here," he said to me as I gave him a quick hug. I noticed that he was much taller than the last time we saw each other. "Whoa, you've been eating your Wheaties," I joked. He blushed slightly. "Yeah, I'm about six-two now."
"So you here with a date or..." I trailed off looking around for his companion. "Actually, my dad paid me twenty dollars to come to your prom?" He scratched the back of his head awkwardly. I bit back a smart comment and shook my head. "Well, I hope the trip was worth it. You think you'll walk out of here with someone on your arm?" I asked looking around at the people who stood idly outside the door. "Nope. I'm afraid that some are taken," he shrugged. "You look really pretty, by the way," he added cooly. "Why did your dad pay you to come here?" I asked changing the subject quickly.
"Well, he promised me apart for this car I'm working on if I came here to tell you something," he admitted. Of fucking course he did. Why couldn't Billy just mind his own business? Jacob was a nice guy and all, but he really needed to learn how to say no to his dad's antics. "Well?" I looked at him expectedly. "Don't be mad," he stated. "Fine I won't kill the messenger," I said evenly. Please hurry the hell up! Why does he talk so slow?
"He umm...he... wants you to break up with your boyfriend," he stuttered. I pressed my lips into a hard line. Billy really sent his son to tell me to break up with Edward? Idiot.
"Yeah so, he doesn't really believe that story about Phoenix," Jacob informed me awkwardly.
"I fell. Tell your dad that I fell, and Edward and his family helped me. They saved my life, even," I said calmly. I didn't want to show my ass at my own prom. Plus, I already looked ridiculous with this cast on my leg.
"I will not break up with my boyfriend because your dad believes some superstition. Tell him to stay out of my personal life," I instructed. Look at me having a personal life and shit. A year ago, no one would have given a shit about what I was doing.
"He also said to tell you that we would be watching," he said seriously. I lost whatever self-control I had left.
"Tell them that they can kiss the darkest part of my black ass," I said and then turned to walk away, which was rather difficult to do with style because of the crutches but I made it work.
I found my way back to Edward and he was still standing in the same spot. I had only been gone for about five minutes. He gave me a funny look. "What?" I asked innocently. "The darkest part of your ass? That sounds nice," he said laughed. "Edward you are nosier than a black grandma sitting on her front porch on a Saturday morning," I told him as he helped me through the door. He laughed loudly. "I was making sure you were okay, and I'm slightly upset," he said. "Why?" I asked looking at him. He met my gaze. "Because he called you pretty. That's far too mundane for you." I giggled in response. If Edward wasn't bothered by Jacob's warning, then I suppose I could get over it too.
I noticed Jessica and Angela, along with the rest of my lunch table crew having a good time on the dance floor. They were so worried about having dates but it looked like they enjoying prom better as a group. Edward and I mingled and talked with them for a while but I felt my social battery draining. I made eye contact with Edward and he seemed to understand what I wanted. He reached his hand out to me and I took it. I sat my crutches down and used him for support. I was able to take little steps with the boot on.
We found ourselves outside. There was an empty gazebo beckoning us. Edward placed his hands on my waist. I couldn't really dance with my current injuries so we just swayed to the music. I had my head on his chest when I realized the absence of sound. There was no heartbeat. It was definitely weird but it didn't bother me. I pulled away to look him in the eyes. "I want this forever," I spoke softly. "We have more than enough time," he responded.
Meeting Edward felt like fate. I couldn't know if my fate was to end up like him but I knew that he was brought into my life for a reason. I also knew that I wasn't ready to let go. "You know I'm right. It's something to consider at least," I said.
"We can consider it in the future when you've lived your human life a little bit more. I don't know why you feel the need to rush. Black don't crack remember," he said. It was probably one of the funniest things I'd ever heard him say. I laughed so hard that I shed a couple of tears. I took a good look at him once I gained my composure. He was absolutely perfect. We were perfect together. How the hell did I get so lucky? "Okay. You've won this time," I said and then kissed him lightly on the lips. He returned the kiss and said, "I'll win every time."
