I can feel myself start to regain consciousness. Flashes from recent events take shape in my head minimally.

That pain will forever haunt me. Even if my memory is fickle.

I hear a voice.

"Liz? Baby?" I recognize it.

"Lizzy?"

My eyes flutter open and see my mom sitting in front of me. I take in some of my surroundings and realize I'm in a hospital room.

"Mom?" My voice is hoarse and my throat is dry. Every breath I take seems to get caught. It's almost painful.

"Hey." She says smiling.

One name immediately comes to mind.

"Where's.. Where's Jasper?" I ask trying to sit up but finding it particularly difficult. I glance down and notice a brace wrapped around my torso. Huh.

"He's asleep." She says helping me get comfy. Mom nods to the side where I see my boyfriend slumped like he is sleeping. "He never leaves."

"And your dad and Bella are in the cafeteria, grabbing some food and coffee." She says smoothing out my blanket.

"What um, what happened?" I ask kind of straining my throat.

"Well when you fell you broke 2 ribs and fractured the middle portion of your spine. Lost a lot of blood." Things are slightly hazy but I can't entirely piece everything together. "You don't remember any of this, do you?" She asks. I'm unsure of how to respond. I feel like I can remember but not exactly the way she's telling me.

"Jasper and Edward came down with their dad to try to convince you both to come back to Forks." She explains. "So you both went over to their hotel, then you tripped," Flashes of me falling down the stairs comes to mind but it seems fake.

I feel over my brace, it's tight, almost causing less breathing room. My pain felt more than that.

"And you fell down two flights of stairs. Went through a window." Mom can barely get the words out. At that I'm reminded of what happened and things become a little clearer.

Every time I take in a breath there's minute sharp pain that radiates. I'm sure the meds are taking the most of it away. That must be the broken ribs. And the brace, keeping me from moving too much.

Fun.

The Cullens must have made up a story to explain my injuries.

My eyes flicker to Jasper who seems to have a pained expression lining his features. It's like he's reliving what I went through. What we went through. I'm sure that couldn't have been easy on him either..

Clearing my throat quietly I ask my next question. "What about Bella? Is she ok?"

"She was first to rush to your side and help you but got caught on some glass herself. Had to get a few stitches but she's ok." She says.

My eyes well up slightly as I realize how much worse it could've been for her had I not taken most of the blows. I raise my hand to the left side of my neck and feel the bandage on it.

What if I hadn't been there? What if Bella had to deal with it all alone?

Mom's eyes start to well at the sight of me holding my tears back, so she glances to the door takes a deep breath then looks back at me.

"Oh sweet girl," Mom says moving my hair out of my face. "I'm so sorry." She we hold eye contact for a while as I take my hand from my neck and place it over hers.
