[chapter one]
SAVANNAH SIGHED FOR WHAT FELT like the thousandth time that day. "If the scepter isn't here Tony," she began into her comms, "I'm blaming you for the waste of time and my possible hypothermia." Sav slightly flinched when she heard multiple shots being fired, causing her hold on Steve to tighten. It was already hard to stay put on the motorcycle, just as Cap promised her it would be, but avoiding the bullets made it a great deal harder.
"You got a read Sav?" Clint asked through the comms. The girl could literally feel, and see, human life for miles and miles; that is up until the point where she was needed to get a read.
She shook her head in agitation, pieces of her hair brushing her face. "Something's blocking me."
"Since when does anything block you?" Natasha questioned curiously and rather bluntly.
Savannah sighed. "Since just now? Things get more interesting by the day."
"Shit," Tony cursed.
Cap grumbled quietly. "Language." His voice radiated seriousness, surprisingly. "JARVIS, what's the view from upstairs?"
Savannah almost choked at hearing him condemn Tony, but refrained from making any comments, instead her left hand reached out to a man nearby, draining enough life out of him to leave him unconscious. She shook her hand to relieve some of the burning that came with using her powers, her brown skin glowing a dark blue. The energy coursed through her veins, making her squirm with discomfort. The feeling quickly settled into something a little more blissful.
"The central building is protected by some kind of energy shield, which is why you couldn't get a read Ms. Martin. Strucker's technology is well beyond any other Hydra base we've taken," JARVIS answered. The AI still didn't seem to grasp the concept of a first name basis, but Savannah had long since learned to simply go along with it.
"Loki's scepter must be here. Strucker couldn't mount this defense without it." Thor's voice carried through the comms. "At long last." He was right of course. Of all the bases they'd taken, this one was proving to be the most unwilling to fall.
The cold air hit Sav's face, making it uncomfortable to take a deep breath. The trees were a blur as Steve and Savannah passed them. "Can I throw this?" She asked suddenly. The soldiers were lining up in an attempt to take them down, and although she could drain them collectively, she could not afford to lose control. Not again.
Steve nodded. "Have at it."
Putting a little weight behind it and using the energy from a couple of men earlier, she threw the shield like a frisbee into the soldiers. It was surprisingly light, but very efficient.
"At long last is lasting a little long, boys," Natasha said, a smirk evident in her voice. Savannah chuckled breathlessly.
"Pick up the shield Savannah," Cap commanded as they approached it. Her bare hand shot out, grabbing the shield.
"Yeah. I think we lost the element of surprise," Clint announced, his voice carrying over the comms.
Savannah scoffed lightly. "Avengers and surprise don't really work well together." She was sure that the people of this base had seen them coming from a mile away.
"Wait a second," Tony let out. "No one else is going to deal with the fact that Cap just said 'language', but never acknowledges Savannah's swearing?"
"I thought I was the only one who noticed."
"I know," Cap replied with slight agitation. "Kid you're going to have to jump."
She didn't question him, her fearlessness coming in handy in this moment. Savannah pulled his shield toward her body, before launching herself off his bike. She hit the ground immediately, curling into the shield. The sound would have been headache inducing had she not been practically floating off the excess energy. Briskly, she moved to her feet.
