Little Russ...
My hood.
My city.
This is where I grew up before I moved to California to study. This is where people from all different race and ethnicity lived, but it was mainly known for the Russians that lived here. Hence the name Little Russ (Little Russia).
I parked my car on the curb before getting out.
Summer was right around the corner, and I could already feel it. The sun and it rays had immediately hit me in my face once I had got out of my car, and out of habit I closed my eyes.
I opened my purse and blindly searched for my black exo shades. Me being the person I am, I picked up a couple of things on accident before I actually managed to grab my glasses. I placed them on my face and began to walk to the diner I practically grew up in.
It was a small Russian restaurant that everyone and their momma went to. It's ran by my mothers adoptive mom, Alyona Vera. She was born in Irkutsk city. It's on the Angara River in eastern Siberia, Russia. She grew up Irkutsk until she was fifteen. She lived in Queens, New York but when this area started to get populated with Russian, her family moved to Little Russ and she hasn't left since. No matter how much my mother baits her to move in with them she just doesn't want to.
I walked a couple of blocks before seeing the big white, blue, and red sign that read: Babushka is cooking. Her whole life surrounded around us and this restaurant.
I was about to walk in when I felt someone touch my hand.
"Pozvol'te mne lechit' vas." The man said biting his lip. Let me treat you.
"Net, spasibo. Ty ne spravish'sya so mnoy." I said bringing down my glasses so I could wink at him. No thank you. You can not handle me.
He looked flabbergasted once I talked back to him in Russian and I couldn't help but to laugh. It's hilarious when people find out I'm polyglot. Especially for the people who likes to underestimating black people and there intelligence. I know six different languages. Italian, Russian, French, Korean, Chinese, and Spanish. If you count English and Jamaican Creol then it would be eight languages that I know. As of right now I'm currently trying to learn Japanese. I could understand it but I couldn't speak it properly.
The man let me go and called me a bitch before walking away. It's funny how he was just trying to holla and now I'm a bitch.
I let out a laugh before I fixed my glasses and walked into the restaurant. My grandmother didn't know I was here so I decided to surprise her.
I pulled out my phone, I began to dial her number. I called and she answered on the second ring.
"Aj, what's wrong? Did you eat." She asked going straight into mama bear mode.
"Are you at work?" I asked taking off my glasses.
Many people turned to look at me but I didn't pay it any attention. They were probably staring at my eyes.
"Da." She said.
"Come out to the front of the dinner." I said smiling.
"Okay?" She said unsure.
I could see her maneuver through everyone, stopping every once in a while to talk to a customer.
"I'm upfront." She said.
"Look up." I said smiling.
Slowly she began to look up. Her eyes met mines and I could see the tears gloss her eyes.
"Moy rebenok!" She shouted making everyone stop what they were doing. My baby.
She ran as fast as her 56 year old legs could carry her. She brung me into a hug and began to kiss my cheek.
"You look so beautiful." She said stepping back to look at me. He
"Thank you mommy." I said kissing her.
"Is that young Aj?" Mr. Leo asked.
Mr.Leo was the owner of the bodega a couple blocks up. When grandma didn't want to give me any money I would go up to his bodega and work for him.
"Mr.Leo!" I said hugging him.
He kissed me on both of my cheeks before he pulled away. Many faces I grew up seeing came up to me and greet me, asking the same questions.
"Let my child breathe." Grandma said pulling me away. Her accent getting stronger.
She sat me on the stool before she went around the counter and passed me a plate of cake and a cup of green tea.
"So, any boyfriend?" Grandma asked sitting down.
This is what she always did. She would give me food or try to be all sweet to me before she start asking me about my love life, one that I don't have.
"I just graduated University mama. YA ne ishchu muzhchinu." I huffed. I'm not looking for a man.
"I need grand babies." She protested.
"I'm only 25." I said eating my cake.
"Eto ideal'noye vremya, chtoby imet' detey!" She exclaimed. This is the perfect time to have children!
"Mama." I said giving her the eye.
"Alright, I respect that you don't want any kids now, but you need a man. You've been busting your culo since you were fifteen, you need to live a little." She said.
"First of all, who taught you how to say culo? Second of all, I'll live a little when I get the rest of my stack." I said.
Grandma huffed in defeat before she took some of my cake.
"You're lucky I like you." She grumbled making me laugh
You just had to love my grandma.
