The apartment door opened and I groaned, curling against Misha. I was tired, and I didn’t want to wake up.
“Collie!”
I sighed, forcing my eyes open. “Yes, Colin?”
He smiled at me eagerly. “Come on! Get up! You promised!”
I sighed as Misha laughed. He kissed me. “You did promise you’d spend the day with your brother,” he said.
“I know, I know,” I said, sitting up and rubbing my eyes. I swung myself out of bed and pulled on shorts and a T-shirt.
“Come on,” Colin said, looking excited. We hadn’t spent time alone together in a while, which I knew upset Colin, especially since I didn’t live at home anymore.
“I need to take away your key to the apartment,” I said to Colin. I kissed Misha before giving him a little wave and following Colin out.
The two of us left the apartment and got in Colin’s car. I leaned against the seat as he played Go Radio, trying to wake myself up a little.
“Where are we going?” I asked.
“Up to the little waterfall. We used to go there a lot when we were younger, remember?” he said with a smile.
“Yea, I remember,” I said, nodding.
“I thought it would be fun,” he said happily.
It sounded super boring, though. “Yea, it’ll be fun,” I said, forcing a small smile for Colin’s sake.
He parked the car a little while later and the two of us got out. We walked together over to the little lake, where a small waterfall was, water crashing down. There were stepping stone throughout the lake, and Colin jumped onto one.
“Don’t jump on those,” I said as he wobbled a little. “They’re slippery.”
“Aw, lighten up Collie!” he said, smiling at me and gesturing me to copy him.
I sighed and leapt forward onto a stepping stone. Colin caught my hand as I wobbled a little, and steadied me.
The two of us hopped from stone to stone, and I found myself laughing a little as we did it. We used to come here a lot as kids, and it was bringing back some good memories.
But then my eyes widened as Colin jumped and slipped. He fell sideways, letting out a yelp as he landed awkwardly.
“Colin!” I cried, jumping off of the stone and into the water, not caring that my sneakers were soaked.
I wadded over to Colin and helped him up. He rubbed his ankle and frowned up at me.
“Is it broken?” I asked anxiously.
He shook his head. “Nah, it just hurts,” he said as I slowly helped him stand. He threw his weight to one side and I held him so that he wouldn’t fall again.
“You idiot!” I said.
“Hey!” he whined.
I sighed and turned, bending a little. “Get on my back.”
He jumped onto my back and I steadied him before slowly making my way back to shore. I walked us back to the car and sat Colin down on the hood, pulling his shoes off and inspecting his injured ankle.
“I’ll be fine. I think I just twisted it,” he said with a sigh.
“You’re such a clumsy idiot,” I grumbled. I sighed and found myself hugging him. “Dumbass. I thought you had really hurt yourself.”
He hugged me back, the smile coming to his face again. “Nah. Just twisted my ankle and scraped up my elbow a little.”
“Klutz,” I said with a sigh, releasing him. “You drive me crazy.”
He smiled and leaned against me. I put an arm around him, returning the smile.
“I know. I love you Collier,” he said.
“Yea, yea, yea. I love you too,” I said with a sigh, but my smile grew a little because I knew I loved my brother, and I was glad he was okay.
