Let us go back, to the day I lost everything, the day I lost my mind, my hope, my best friend. The gasps of air that she had made were slamming against my ear drums. I could hear her, slowly slipping into the abyss of the lake, yet I couldn’t see her under the cover of night. Why had we come here so late? The reason seemed so unimportant now that I couldn’t even try to remember it. “Hang in there Kara,” I screamed, kicking my shoes off. “I’m coming!” I backed up, taking a deep breath and leaping into the water. The ice cold feeling devoured me, but the heat from my adrenaline kept me going. I couldn’t hear her anymore; the gasps of air had stopped. In the distance I could make out flashlights heading our way. Someone must have called the police when they saw two teenagers going towards the lake. I dove down, using the slight light from the distant flashlights to my advantage; I could see her now, sinking deeper to the bottom. I kicked my feet, forcing myself down and reached out to grab her shirt. I started pulling, bringing her to the surface before I lost my breath. The cold air hit me hard once I resurfaced, a police officer was closer now, seeing the scene, and he began to run. He reached out, grabbed Kara from my hands and pulling her to dry land. I got out of the water, pushing the cop out of the way, my mind going blank at the sight of her closed eyes. “Kara!” I screamed, grabbing her shoulders, shaking her violently. But it was too late. Oh yes, the reason for going there that night now seemed like nothing but a figment of my imagination.
