A soft knock came at Avery's open door. He didn't sit up from his bed or even turn to look and see who it was. Even though there was only one person who came to see him anyway.

"Avery?" Ms. Blake called out to him.

"What?" He replied, unenthusiastically.

"There's a couple here to see you. I think they're pretty confident about meeting you." She explained with a smile. This made Avery shoot out of his bed.

"Really? A couple here to see...me? Are you sure they didn't want to see the girl Avery here? None of the adults who come looking for children ever mention me. As soon as they see me they'll probably change their minds." He mumbled. Ms. Blake came over and put a hand around his shoulder, leading him down the hall to the room where the kids and adults meet and talk one on one. Ms. Blake opened the door, leading Avery inside.

"Alright, here he is! I'll leave you three alone to chat, and come back later to check in." She said to the two men, before walking out and closing the door behind her.

The room was silent as Avery took his seat across from the couple. It felt awkward to make eye contact so he kept them glued to the floor.

"Hi there, kiddo. My name is Winston, and this is my husband, Alden. He's a college professor, while I'm a chef." The man on the left, Winston, introduced. The one on the right, Alden, scoffed and adjusted his glasses.

"Chef? I don't think the food you make is work by a professional." He quipped teasingly. Winston shushed him.

"Shh! At least let him think I'm a good cook!" He whined playfully. Avery stifled a giggle and hid the smile on his face.

"It's be cruel to let him, babe." Alden playfully retorted, before turning back to Avery.

"Avery, was it? Would you mind telling us a little bit about yourself?" He asked. Avery shrugged.

"Uh, sure I-I guess...Well I've been here since I was 8 years old." He began.

"How old are you now?" Winston asked. "14 good long years old." He replied.

"Anyways, my birth parents were pretty shitty, uh excuse my language, I'm sorry. But they really were. They'd scream at me, hit me, lock me in my room. Sometimes I'd wonder why they'd even had a child. Maybe as a personal punching bag? I never really knew. But, I guess one day I wasn't a good enough punching bag anymore, so they dropped me off here and never look back."

Both men were speechless by that short exposition. Neither knew what exactly to say.

"You've been here, s-six years? Why hasn't anyone adopted you before that?" Winston asked sympathetically. Avery just smiled bitterly.

"I guess nobody wants the abused, depressed kid. I could see it the second I walked in oh their faces that I wasn't the right one." He grumbled.

The two looked to each other and nodded. "We do." They said together. Avery looked at them.

"What?" He asked, surprised.

"We want to adopt you. You deserve a good life, and we believe we can give one to you." Alden stated proudly. Ms. Blake then came back into the room.

"How are things going, gentlemen?" She asked, looking from the adults to Avery. Winston smiled at her.

"Very well." He said. Avery smiled too. "Very well indeed." He chimed in.
