Chapter 14
"You want to know what I'm doing?"

I look up and smile when I see Val isn't reading. She braids a small strand of hair, ignoring our homework. She notices my sudden attention is on her and not her English book. A smile tugs at her mouth, showing her white teeth.

She shrugs at me, "it got boring."

"Well hate to break it to you, but we have a test Friday."

Her evil grin spreads across her face, that can't be good. When she smiles like that it means she has a plan. I roll my eyes and already now what she thinks, and I'm not cheating for her.

"No, you can't have the answers."

Her wicked grin falls into a pout, her bottom lip sticking out. "But I'll stick with you forever through this sucky life."

"Sure," I say sarcastically.

All jokes gone her face turns serious. "I mean it. Give me the answers or not, I'm sticking with you. I'm stuck on you like glue."

Her all around grin comes back and sends me a wink. I smile and rerun her words in my head. Val goes back to braiding her hair, instead of studying. I swear she will never pass eighth grade.

"But I'll stick with you through this sucky life," her words play on repeat in my head. I smirk and look down at my book.

"I know you will," I mumble to my book.

"What?" Val looks up from her braided piece of hair. I glance at her before looking back at the page I hadn't bothered to read.

"Nothing."

I lift my head off the window and notice saliva runs down it. I pull down my sleeve and wipe off the saliva from the window and the side of my cheek. Axel glances at me with a smile before he turns back to the road.

"Have a good nap?"

"Uh-huh, how much longer?" I yawn loudly.

The guys snicker in the back, but J eyes them. He has kept a straight face the whole ride, he acts miserable. I try to rub the sleep from my eyes.

"An hour at the most," Phoenix says from the backseat.

I nod and watch the yellow line move on the black road. Hours go by just watching the moving line. Before I know it, we're passing a sign welcoming us to Keystone. We pull up to my house, and I think leaving this place was my biggest mistake.

But leaving just help set the bomb off.

The front door slings open and out runs Shawn and mom with open arms. Hopping out of the car, I wrap my arms around Shawn. I lift him up kissing him all over his face. His giggles ring in my ear as mom sobs overwhelm me. Tears of joy stream down her face, as she holds me and Shawn in her arms.

I hear the car door open with a pop, and hear mom gasp. I spin around and see J standing there awkwardly, with his hands in his pockets. Shawn wiggles out of my arms and runs up to J, giving him the biggest hug I've ever seen. Mom stands there with a hand covering her mouth, her eyes humongous.

"S-sissy? How i-is he not-t dead?" I smile at Shawn, that's when I notice my own cheeks are wet. I look J into his eyes, a smile playing at his lips.

"It's impossible."

J laughs, "nothing's impossible with me."

My mom's shock wears off as she stumbles towards J. Her shoulders gently shake from her silent cries as she embraces him.
