Chapter 12
"Is this her?"
**The loud rumble of the trucks engine keeps me from sleeping. Grace fell asleep a while a go and Aston watches the road. Stars sprinkle the deep blue sky and the headlights light up the concrete road. We have been driving for hours, to where, I wasn't told. I'm still in this scratchy dress and painful heels. I huff and roll down my window, I need air. A wave of nausea washes over me, sweat trickling down my brow. The window blows my hair behind my shoulders, letting in the sprinkles of rain. The aroma of wet plants and gas from the truck fills my nostrils. The sudden beeping of a message from my phone brings me back to reality.
I glance down, feeling my anger boil inside me.
Phoenix
Where are you!? We got caught up in something but handled it. Call me ASAP!
"Yeah you got caught up in something," I mumble to myself.
I erase the text, but before I can click off my phone it dies. Well it's hard to say when I can get a charger, much less comfortable clothes. I sigh and look back up to Aston. He hasn't said a word since we left the school. I tried to get him to answer me as to where were heading. As you can see it got nowhere.
"Can we grab something to eat I'm starving." Aston glances at me in the back seat. My stomach growls backing me up. Aston sighs and nods, still saying nothing.
Another half an hour passes and we finally come along a small town. It's like Keystone, but smaller. Grace wakes up when we pull into the drive through of a Big Larry's burger joint.
"What do you want?" I'm taken back when I hear Aston speak for the first time in hours.
"I-I uh..."
"It's not a hard decision," he snaps.
"Just a original burger with a soda." He rolls his eyes and orders my food. Grace gives him her order.
"Okay, please pull to the first window," the cheery voice says over the speaker. Big Larry's sign flashes, saying 'open 24 hours.' Well last time I checked it was around one in the morning.
Aston hands the cheery lady the proper amount of cash in exchange for our food. I wouldn't be all rainbows and sunshine if I had to work at one o'clock, but somehow she is. We pull out and I dig into my food. Grace takes a hug bite of her burger as she scans her surroundings.
"Where are we?" She asks with a mouthful of food. Me and Aston grimace at the food that flies out of her mouth. Aston drives into the parking lot of a clothing mart. He parks the truck and eats his food as well.
"Riverfront." Grace nods and we continue to eat in silence. Riverfront is a small town that is a little ways from Keystone. Keystone is known for its big population and big companies. Riverfront was where I was born but I grew up at Keystone. I smile at what little memories I had here.
I wonder what my mom is doing right now? I texted her and explained what was happening. She never replied, but I won't know now since my phone is dead. I wipe off the ketchup and mustard from my mouth and hop out of the car. Aston slips me a fifty from the cracked window and I run into grab me some clothes. They have a large selection, but I go for my normal look. I pick out a nice leather jacket that cost me almost the whole fifty Aston gave me. I pick out three shirts and two pairs jeans and combat boots, I walk up to the cashier. He looks to be about my age with dark circles under his eyes, his sleep deprivation showing.
He checks me out and I hand him the fifty with my money added. He frowns and looks at me, "your twenty dollars short." Seriously? I added a twenty to Aston's fifty.
