Chapter 1: Awoken.
Blackness.
Darkness.
I'm trapped here, with far off noises of loud beeps.
Where am I?
Who am I?
Fighting the darkness, is difficult. It feels like a thousand pounds is pressing on my eyelids. Those far off noises aren't so far off anymore. I can make out words, some words.
"No recongnition..... waking up..... not likely...." Words aren't making sense. Slowly, pound by pound, the wieghts are being removed. Flickers of light are bouncing off, into a far away land.
A pounding is drilling into me. Stiffness and pain, thats all I feel. More voices, some deep, some high, some completely bored, some sniffling.
"She could possibly hear you, Mr.&Mrs." The deep, bored voice tells Mr.&Mrs, whatever that means. Lighter and lighter, my eyes are like springs now. I feel the tugging on them. A shift in weight, my leg is heavy now.
"Honey, can you hear me?" A light, feathery voice talks now. Is that Mrs? Maybe. "Please, open your eyes!"
I try, I really do try to open my eyes. But when I do, I'm plummeted back into darkness.
This time, I can feel my eyes. They want to open. To see no more darkness. It can't be hard, theres no weight. I can do it.
My eyes flutter, and then, brightness.
White.
White, white, and more white.
*BEEEEEEEEP BEEEEEEP BEEEEEEEEEP* That noise is in my ear. Everythings white, a blurry white thing. My eyes start to focus. A reddish brown mess of hair lies on my legs. Everything else is white. White papers hang off white bricks. Blink, stay away from darkness! I inhale, feeling the air reach me, dragging me further into the light.
"Alyssa?" That feathery voice appears out of nowhere, looking for me. My head snaps back to that messy mane, whose staring at me, her deep brown eyes full of confusion, love, worry, and sadness. "Alyssa! Your awake! OH MY GOD! NURSE!" She begins shouting and embraces me. Who is this lady? How does she know me?
"CHRISTANA! Let Alyssa go!" A deep voice yells, causing me to flinch. She recoils and looks up sheepishly at the man.
"Sorry." She mumbles lightly, gets up, and walks over toward the man. The hug and begin a conversation. I feel like an intruder, and I don't know what to do. My eyes roam to the corner. White, but flowers are there. Bright flowers. Rising above them, are balloons with "GET WELL SOON" Written on them. Who's sick?
"Alyssa." A new voice snaps me back to the people. A boy, about my age, I'd guess, with the same reddish-brown hair as the woman, shallow green eyes, and very bushy eyebrows. He looked at me expectantly, as if I knew him.
"Honey.... Can you speak?" The woman said. Her petite body is worn down looking, as if she used to be very fit. Now, her skin sags, her deep eyes are surrounded in bags, and she looks like she ould really do well with some rest. I open my mouth to speak, but nothing comes out.
"That's very common, I read it in the brouchures, she might need to relearn how to talk." The man, who I notice has the same green, shallow green eyes as the boy, explains. I nod, as if he's taking to me. His body is strong, as if he's a laborer. His broad shoulders hold the women up, as she cries, staining a royal blue shirt that compliments the olive skintone he sports. The boy is a spitting image of him.
"Oh, I can't believe she's awake!" The woman, I've come to believe that shes the mother and wife of the other two, shouts before a fresh stream of tears attack her. Confused, I knit my eyebrows together in a puzzling fashion. A chuckle comes from the boy.
"Oh, she must be so confused! We need to explain! You know what the doctor said!" The mom exclaimed to the dad. She seems very hyper, like she's doing drugs or something. I nod, telling her that what she said was right. She opens her mouth, takes a huge breath, and launches into talking. I can't hear though, because the dad clamped his hand over her mouth.
"Honey, we can't put her under too much stress." He looks at me and continues. "Alyssa, you were hurt, it wasn't your fault, and now, your going to get better." There's an undercurrent of emotion, but I ignore it.
Who are these people?
I'm the hurt one? I don't think so. I look up at the ceiling. White.
How did I get hurt? What happened, and why would I think it's my fault?
I need to know. Slowly, I raise my hand and point at them, then raise my eyebrows, confused. They don't seem to understand. A man in a blue suit comes in and sits down next to me. He's wearing a big smile on his face, and plants a kiss on my forehead.
"Hello Alyssa! I'm your doctor, Luke. I'm glad to see your big, brown eyes finally!" Luke's voice is smooth, like a very good actor's
.
I open my mouth to talk, but Luke talks again. "From recent CAT scans, you don't need to relearn to talk, you just need to give yourself time. You've been silent for 65 days!"
65 DAYS? What is he talking about? My eyes widen in panic.
"Don't worry. You'll figure it out soon enough! You're fine, and safe now!" He explains to me.
And then, heaviness seeps into my body.
