That was a harsh punch from reality. Really, what was going through my mind, trying to kiss her like that!? Maybe the thoughts of me or Katie dying and never seeing each other again took control of my mind and my actions. Connor came to sit near me.
-Well, that didn't go well..
-What!? You saw it?
-How could I not?
-So you knew about the whole crush thing?
-Dude, half of our pranks are made especially for her since you were 12! Do you think I'm blind or stupid?
-Both.
He acted hurt. When he saw I just sighted, a serious expression appeared on his face.
-Just give her time! he said.
-Well what if we don't have time!? What if I die in this war? What if...what if she dies?
My voice broke at the last sentence. Connor put a hand on my shoulder.
-Then I'll be with you.
I smiled. I realized I haven't even thought of what missing Connor would have felt like. He was a part of me, my truest friend and my only true family. I don't know what I would be without him.
-Thanks, Connor. That means a lot, actually.
I messed up his hair playfully and he punched me in the shoulder, grinning. In no time we were there. Everyone was serious and I tried my best to cheer everyone up.
We got up high, to Olympus. The place was awesome, even if it was empty. The Athena kids looked as if they wanted to hug the beautiful walls made of marble and gold. Then Percy told me and Connor that we have the responsibility over us, and had to take care of the others as him and Annabeth talk with Hestia. I grinned like a maniac to my brother. All of us went around the "city", looking for clues or things that might help us in battle. I kept my ground but it was really hard to not want to steal any of those beauties, being a son of Hermes. I tried to count how many demigods were here: 16 (including the 2 of us) from my cabin, 11 from the Apollo cabin, 9 from the Aphrodite cabin, 7 from the Hephaestus cabin, 6 from the Demeter cabin, 5 from the Athena cabin and just one from the Dionysus cabin (poor Castor). We were a lot of demigods, but we weren't much if you thought we were going to fight against hundreds of monsters and fooled demigods. A voice shook me out of my thoughts.
-Hey, guys, I think you should see this...
It was Malcolm from the Athena cabin. He was looking at a telescope. You could see the city from bellow. No sound, no movement...New York was completely frozen!
I immediately ran to announce Percy and Annabeth about it.
-Katie, can you take care of the others as I go and call Annabeth and Percy? I asked.
She nodded, through she looked a little nervous about it. Michael saw it and came at Katie's side.
-I'll help her! he said, putting a hand on her shoulder.
She smiled at him and I tried to keep myself from jumping at his neck. I kept my ground and ran with Connor to Percy and Annabeth. They came with us, then all of us got down. Everyone was sleeping. It was such a horrible sight, I almost wanted to cover my eyes, like the little kids did. Then Annabeth took out some kind of machine. You could see the whole city with it!
-Stop! Connor said.
-What!? Annabeth asked. Did you see the enemies?
-No, he responded. But look! There's a store full of candies! And everyone's sleeping!
Then he turned at me:
-You're thinking of what I'm thinking?
I grinned, but Katie looked at both of us as if we were crazy.
-Are you mad!? You are NOT going to steal from a candy shop in the middle of the war! she commanded.
-Ok, ok, I'm sorry! Connor said sarcastically, as I rolled my eyes. Katie saw what I did and got out her tongue. I smirked, she sighted. Then all of our cabins were told to take care of one bridge. We were informed of ours, and told to make as many pranks on the monsters as we wanted. Man, did I die and was in Elysium already!?
I led my cabin to the bridge. Just when we started to walk, I saw Katie drop her knife. I picked it up for her and held it high.
-You will come back to me after the war, won't you, darlin'? I asked, smirking.
-Just give me the knife, Travis, she responded. (I'm sorry, I don't think any of you will get the reference but I ship Riarkle too much).
She started to walk away, taking the knife, then she stopped. She turned her head and said.
-Come back alive, alright?
I smiled.
-I'll try.
She gave me a sincere smile. Then she walked to her siblings. Connor came near me.
-Hey, can we lead our cabin to battle or are you going to stare at Katie until a monster jumps on you?
-Shut up, I said, smiling, following him.
When we reached the tunnel, my siblings waited for a motivational speech or something like that. I started:
-This is our speech...
-...make deadly pranks...Connor continued.
-...be careful not to fall in them...
-...kill as many monsters as you can...
-...stay alive and...
-HAVE FUN!
The last line was said by both of us at unison. My siblings laughed and started doing their work. We put mines, traps and deadly pranks everywhere. Then, when we were finally breathing out relief because we finished our work, the monsters came. They were around 200! But the most of them died because of our plan. It was hilarious! Just around 50 of the monsters and turned demigods survived. They came running to us.
-Hermes children, let's fight! I yelled.
-We will win! Connor shouted.
A serpent came at me hissing but I simply cut her head with my sword and she turned into dust. Then I saw a cyclops fighting with one of my younger sisters, Alice, and I stabbed him from behind. I saw a girl from the other side who seemed around 12 running at me. I didn't have the heart to harm her, so I just pushed her into a wall, and she collapsed. I heard Connor wailing:
-Travis, watch out!
I turned around and I saw a hellhound running straight at me. Connor was on it's back. With his and Marco's , one of my sibling's help, we made it ran away. It went on for about 30 minutes until all the monsters and other demigods disappeared. We sat there, exhausted. I looked around. There were two deaths from our side: Marco, a 13 year's old boy, son of Hermes, killed by a serpent, and Lucy, an 11 year's old girl. She wasn't even claimed by her godly parent, and she was killed by one of the turned against us demigods. We stayed near them. Most of my siblings were crying and we had a lot of people who needed a doctor, because they were badly wounded. But we won. I knew the war wasn't over but I couldn't help feeling victorious. My left leg was bleeding, but it wasn't something serious so I offered to carry Olivia Dunham, one of my younger sisters, to the hotel we were going to meet in. She had a broken ankle and, even if she said she was alright, all of us knew she couldn't walk. We reached the hotel and we walked in. I put Olivia down and called a doctor (Kayla from the Apollo cabin) to look after her. I sat down. The Demeter cabin wasn't here yet and I was worried. Just when I thought of what could have happened, the door burst open. Katie was fine, she just had a few scratches. Miranda was resting on her shoulder, bleeding badly from her waist. Kayla (who already finished with Olivia), ran at Miranda and sat her down. When she was feeling better, Katie looked around. She saw me and Connor and waved to us. Then she saw Lacy in a corner and smiled to her. Nyssa was roaming around, trying to help, and Katie looked happy and relieved seeing all of her friends are alive. But even from where I was I could see Kayla's sad expression. Katie looked confused, and with a worried expression, she asked.
-Kayla, where's Michael?
Kayla started to cry.
