When Connor entered the "room", I stared at him as if he was a stranger from another world. I guess I forgot that there are other people on this planet too. What can I say, it's Travis's fault!
I didn't even have time to understand what Travis told me. When we walked out, people circled us, giggling or asking stupid questions, I didn't fully understand. To be honest, I didn't even try to listen to them, I just gave everyone an absent and confused look. Travis, on the other side, didn't look anyone in the eye and walked straight to the place where he sat before Connor gave him the dare. My friend's happy and curious expressions became slightly worried, but they decided to not put any questions. 'That's good', I thought. 'I think I'm too confused to answer any questions right now.'. We sat back down and continued the game. I mean, they continued the game. I wasn't paying attention to what was happening around me. For the rest of the game, I was caught in my thoughts, though I could not think straight in that noisy room. I sometimes looked at Travis, but he avoided my stare. When the party was finally over, after we ate some cake (which Pollux made, wow, I didn't knew he could bake!) I walked to my cabin with Miranda and the rest of my siblings, not before thanking everybody for the wonderful surprise. I changed into my pajamas and went to bed. I tried to clear my mind of all the past events, but it just wouldn't shut up. I couldn't sleep. 'Maybe I just need some fresh air.' I told myself.
I walked out of my cabin as quiet as I could, trying to not alert any of my siblings. I closed the door behind me and sat down on the porch. I looked up, at the starts. I sighted. They were so many, all of them shining brightly, fighting their way out of the darkness. 'Maybe we're all stars.' I thought. The thought made me smile. I looked around, at the cabins. All of them were quiet in the darkness. Everyone was asleep. Then I saw a silhouette on cabin's eleven porch. I looked at it, trying to figure out who it was. One of the Stolls, I'm sure. I could recognize that curly hair from miles away. But I had this feeling it was Travis. I knew he liked to sit outside when something big happened to him. I wanted to talk to him. Maybe he could explain the words he said to me, and if he really meant them. I just needed to know. But what if the harpies catch me? 'Come on, Katie, it's not that far!' I tried to encourage myself. 'And the Stolls do it every night, how hard can it be?'. I took a deep breath and stepped on the grass. Now I wasn't under my cabin's protection. And that means the harpies have the right to kill me. 'You have to be fast, Katie.' I whispered.
But it turns out it isn't that easy to walk quietly on the grass in the middle of the night, when you can't see clearly and everything around you is dead-silent. Travis heard me and turned his head in my direction. For a few seconds he looked confused, trying to figure out who am I and why am I running towards his cabin. When he realized it's me, he stood up and whisper-shouted:
-Katie!?
I continued running, but he started running in my direction too. Faster than ever, as if he was terrified. I didn't understand why until I heard a growl behind me. A harpy. Schist.
I started running too, as fast as I could, and ended up running into Travis. We both fell down. We were about to stand up and run to one of the cabins when the harpy reached us. She was looking at us from above, as we sat there, on the ground, terrified. She had the right to kill us, so she didn't need to feel guilty, Chiron couldn't make her pay for what she was about to do. Travis put his arm on my shoulder, as I came closer to him, horrified by the thought we were both going to die any second now. The harpy was still analyzing us, with a satisfied expression. She was happy she could kill us. We couldn't run. We couldn't hide. This was the end.
-Travis? I asked, quietly.
-Yes, Katie?
He turned his head to look at me, his curly hair falling in his terrified, deep blue eyes, a little dirt on his forehead from when he fell on the grass a few seconds ago, his hand on my shoulder, trying to protect me from my inevitable death. That was the exact moment I realized it, and I said it out loud at the same time, a small smile forming on my frightened expression, even if I knew the harpy was ready to kill us. That's when I spoke.
-I love you too.
A blinding light erupted from our tattoos as we covered our eyes and the harpy let out a scream, then ran away, horrified.
