The light from our tattoos wouldn't disappear. It wasn't an ordinary light, it was so powerful I was afraid to open my eyes, in case it would blind me. But it felt warm even so.
Just when I was starting to get worried, it was night again. Before my eyes got used to the darkness, Katie grabbed my arm and ran to my cabin's porch, because it was the closest one. 'Smart decision.' I thought.
She looked away from me, and I did too. That led to an awkward silence. After about two minutes, Katie whispered:
-Look at your wrist.
I did as she said. There, under my soulmate tattoo, were now written two words: Katie Gardner. I laughed.
-What's so funny?
Katie was now looking at me.
-It's nothing, it's just that...
I took a long pause, in which Katie's eyes were fixed on me.
-I always wanted this. Your name written here.
Katie looked away, so I couldn't see her face. 'Crap that sounded cheesy.' I thought.
-I never thought your name would be written here, Katie mumbled, still looking away. I think I never liked you in that way...
Ouch, that didn't sound well. I tried not to look hurt.
-...until now.
I turned my head in her direction, looking at her, surprised. She looked at me and gave me a small, shy smile.
-I...you...wow, I mumbled.
She started laughing. I laughed too. We laughed together for a few minutes, as quietly as we could. She came closer to me, and I took her hand. Then we looked at the sky, in silence. Katie sometimes showed me constellations, and I nodded, looking mostly at her. I loved the way her face lit up when she looked at the stars, or when she was gardening. I tried finding some constellations too, but none of them were actual constellations, and that made Katie laugh.
-Shut up, Travis, you're getting everything wrong! she mocked me.
Or she just mumbled "stupid" under her breath.
-C'mon Katie can't you see I'm trying my best?
-You're not even trying.
I put my hand on my heart and pretended to be hurt. She rolled her eyes, but smiled. Then I tried something.
-The stars are beautiful tonight, I said.
Katie nodded, smiling at the sky.
-You know what else is beautiful?
Before Katie could say something, a voice behind us answered.
-Me.
We turned our heads around to find three laughing figures. Cecil, Julia and of course, the one who spoke, Connor. My siblings. They were in front of my cabin's closed door, laughing their heads off.
-Wha-how long have you been here? Katie asked, standing up.
-Well...Julia started. There was a really powerful light. It woke up most of the cabin. The little ones were scared, so Connor told them that he's going to see what happened. He asked two of us to come with him, in case there's some kind of monster. Me and Cecil volunteered. When we came out, the light has disappeared, but we found you two running for your lives. Connor said we could go back in, but he wants to see this. Of course me and Cecil refused to go back. So..the three of us just sat here.
-How didn't you see us? Cecil asked, laughing.
-They were scared, didn't you see? Connor answered for me. Now, Julia, Cecil, go in the cabin and tell the others everything is alright, me and Travis will lead Katie to her cabin.
They mumbled some things but they finally entered the cabin.
-If you want, I can leave you alone...Connor started.
-No, it's fine, Katie responded. But I'm worried about the harpies.
I grinned at her.
-Let us show you.
I looked at Connor. He grinned, then nodded. We had a secret route that led to the other cabins. The harpies didn't know it. We led Katie to her cabin.
-Goodnight, Katie! Connor said, then left.
That left me with her, on her cabin's porch.
-See you tomorrow, soulmate! I told her, grinning.
-See you tomorrow, Stoll, she responded.
I blew her a kiss while I was walking away and she rolled her eyes, laughing.
On my cabin's porch, Connor was waiting for me.
-You realize we need to prank her, right? he told me, when I reached him.
~The next day~
I was in my bed, awake. My cabin was sleeping. I couldn't. I was waiting for her reaction when she saw the prank. Chocolate bunnies. On her cabin's roof. I was smiling to myself. Then I heard it.
-STOLLS!
Oh, how I love that voice..
