Infernus Domus

Hi. My name's Devi and I am 17 Autumns old. I grew up in an orphanage, that, while I won't name for copyright issues, we'll call "Infernus Domus." In said orphanage I learnt a couple of things:

1. Werewolves exist, and I am one (well... Sorta. I'm actually a werefox, but it's close enough!).

2. If someone pisses you off, turning into aforementioned werefox form and mauling them is NOT a good option (however satisfying it may feel at the present).

And 3. For the love of the Gods, DON'T EAT THE MASHED POTATOES!

Whilst I was at Infernus Domus I found two other werewolves and we kinda formed a pack, it wasn't proper, but it was all we had and at an orphanage, you take what you get.

However, today is my last day at this hellhole and I'm going to miss this place. Two weeks ago, a couple came in and decided that this short, depressed, anxiety ridden girl who is perpetually in jeans and a FOB tee-shirt is just what they were looking for. The poor souls. So now, I am off to the town of Cedar Bluffs in Middle Of Nowhere, North America. Great, I know. I have already packed my shit and said goodbye to the only people on this doomed Earth that actually like me.

The couple is meant to be here to pick me up at 1:00 pm, it is currently 12:50. Ten minutes untill I leave my old life behind. I have to fight to not scream.

12:51 pm. I grab my tiny, black suitcase and my bat-backpack and walk towards the door of my small, bland room. I grab hold of the doorknob and force myself to turn it. The door swings outward, I hesitantly walk through it. I want to turn back to look at the room that has been mine for 16 Autumns but I do not. It will only hurt more.

I walk down the corridor, recognising each and every crack that snowflakes the white walls.

"Hey freak!" a hoarse voice shouts from behind me. I turn to see the bane-of-my-existance-total-douche named Blake walking briskly towards me. This was one thing that I would not miss about this place.

"What do you want?" I demand.

"I wanna know how you manage to get a family and the rest of us don't"

"Perhaps it is because I don't act like a cretin and my IQ is in the positive numbers," I say sharply.

"I think you should watch your fucking mouth or I'll knock out your teeth!" Blake warns me angrilly.

"I'm so terrified, really I am. Except: wait, I'm not. So can you piss off because I have places to be," with that I turn my back on him and walk the rest of the way down the corridor and down the stairs to the ground floor.

On my way down, several other kids watch me go with expressions that range from envy to anger to a hope so bright that I want to cry. I could remember when I was like that, so young and hopeful. Sure that any day now I would be seen by a couple and be taken home and loved. No such luck, until now.

"DEVI!" my best friend slash packmate Sarah yells as I am pulled into a crushing hug, "You can't lave yet! I haven't said goodbye properly!"

"Sarah! I'm going to miss you but-ahhh! You've already-ow- said goodbye. Twice," I manage to say, my ribs aching from her grip.

"But I haven't said it properly!" she tells me, sounding hysterical. I notice that she has tears streaming down her freckled face and tears build up in my own hazel eyes. "I don't want you to go" she sobs.

I don't want to go either my fox wimpers. Shut up, I think back at it, we don't have a say in it.

"I'm really gonna miss you! Take care of Rosey, don't let her start hurting herself again. You're going to be the leader now," I tell Sarah. I had been the leader of the pack since I was the oldest.

"I will, I promise,"

"Devlin!" Mrs Baxter calls from the other side of the room. Mrs Baxter is the woman in charge of adoptions and is probably the most terrifying person you'll ever meet. She wears pastel green every day coupled with badly applied make up and a scowl that would make a brick shit bricks. "Come here please, your new family is waiting for you!" she tells me.

NO! Not yet! My fox yells. We'll be okay, I think back.

I walk forward, flanked by Sarah who still has tears streaming from her sapphire eyes. Ahead, the people who will now be my family stand. The lady is tall, with blonde hair and brown eyes. The man is also tall, about 6'2'', with black hair and green eyes. They seem nice enough.

I force a smile, my heart pounds. I give Sarah one last hug as I whisper "goodbye." I let her go and walk towards my new life.

"Hello, sweetheart, my name is Lisa and this is my husband Grant," Lisa smiles as she speaks. I try to smile back. "Shall we go? Or do you need more time?"

"No, no, it's, I'm ready," I stutter as I look at the ground.

"Then let's get a wriggle on," Grant tells me.

My new family and I walk out the door, I hear Sarah sobbing brokenly behind me and I look back. I try to give her a reasuring smile but it turns sour in my mouth.

I can't take this, I don't want to leave this place, I don't want to leave my friends, the only people I love.

I walk out the door and start my new life.
