I sat quietly in the ICU waiting room, playing Temple Run on my phone. Sammi was doing a little better, and her doctor said she may even be able to come home soon. I paused my game and looked at the clock. It was just past midnight. I sighed, getting up and walking out of the waiting room, heading towards the small snack area just down the hall. I was starving.
I'd been thinking a lot over the past two days at the hospital. How could I tell Sammi I was having a baby after she'd just lost hers? I didn't want her to hurt anymore.
I fumbled around in my pocket, pulling out the wrinkled five dollar bill Andy had given me before walking outside with CC to smoke. I straightened out the bill as best I could on the side of the machine before letting the machine eat the money, grabbing my apple out of the bottom, and walking back to the waiting room. CC was back, but Andy was nowhere to be seen.
"Where's Andy?" I asked curiously, sitting down next to him and biting into my apple.
"Jinxx needed to talk to him about something, they're both outside." He sighed, rubbing his eyes.
"CC, if you're tired, go home and sleep."
"No, I'm fine. Everyone else is doing just fine up here, I'll survive."
I sighed. "Okay."
About that time, Andy and Jinxx strolled in. Andy had a big smile on his face and a red box with a huge black bow.
"Cora, can I talk to you alone?" He asked, grinning.
"Uh, sure." I gave him a confused look as he led me out into the hallway, enthusiastically handing me to the huge box.
"Happy birthday!" He leaned down and kissed my cheek.
"What? It's not my birthday, Andy."
"Unless your birthday magically changed itself to a day other than October 30, then yes, dear, it's your birthday."
I hadn't even realized what the date was. Today was my 20th birthday. I smiled. He'd remembered, even though I hadn't.
"You didn't have to get me anything." I said quietly, looking down at the box in my hands. It was big, but insanely light.
"Well, technically, I didn't. Just open it." He grinned.
I walked quickly over to a long bench and sat down, with Andy close next to me. I carefully undid the black ribbon and pulled the lid off of the giant red box.
"Aww!" I squeeled, smiling from ear to ear.
I reached into the box and pulled out a black onesie, unfolding it and turning it around to see the writing. On the front in silver letters it read 'Set The World On Fire'.
"It's adorable." I said quietly, laying my head against his chest.
He chuckled. "I promise you'll get a gift of your own, but right now while we're crammed up in this hospital, this will just have to do. Do you really like it?"
"I love it." I squeeled again, holding it back up.
"I love you." He laughed, kissing my head.
We sat in the hallway for a long time. Not saying anything, just being together.
