"What? Is something wrong?"
"No- Well, kind of."
"Okay, what is it?"
Tom let himself in and I shut the door behind him, leaning against it with my arms folded across my chest confusedly.
He sighed, standing closely in front of me.
"Emma, I think- Oh, am I interrupting something?" Lily asks, crossing her arms as she leaned against the wall that separates the living room from the kitchen. She wore a disapproving look, and shot me a glare.
I bit my bottom lip and tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear out of nervousness.
"Oh hey, Lily is it?" Tom asked, backing away from me a little and turning towards her with a small smile.
"Yeah. Listen, if you came here to-"
"I think I know what you're gonna say, and that's not why I'm here," He interrupted, shaking his head softly.
I looked at him in confusion.
"Mind telling me why you're here, then?" Lily questioned, clearly not having it.
"Okay, Lil. Back off, it's alright," I spoke before Tom could. "Could you give us a minute?"
She shrugged and rolled her eyes, spinning around and heading into the guest bedroom.
I sighed as I heard the door shut, and Tom turned back to me.
"Sorry."
He shrugged, giving me a reassuring smile that made my heart flutter.
"It's alright. Listen, I came here to apologize."
I tilted my head to the side in confusion as he spoke.
"For what?"
"I hurt you. I know I did, and I'm so sorry. And listen, I usually don't go from girl to girl or whatever. That's not who I am, as I'm sure you know. I'm just- I'm sorry I hurt you."
Tom peers down at the ground, as if ashamed.
I pull him into a hug, shutting my eyes. He takes a second, but eventually wraps his arms around me.
And for a moment, just a split second, nothing matters.
I slowly opened my eyes to see Tom pulling away, looking at me sweetly.
"Are we okay, Em?"
I nod silently. He smiled wholeheartedly, before standing up. I stood up with him, my heart sinking at his words.
"I'd better get going, I'm sure Anna's wondering where I am. Ill see you around, yeah?"
Again, I answer in a silent nod, my smile slowly beginning to fade.
As he turns to walk out, he suddenly spins back around.
"Oh, and I heard you went out with Harrison last night? How was it?"
"It was.. Fun, actually," I muttered in response, my voice breaking half way through the sentence.
I looked down at the ground, partly out of embarrassment, partly because I couldn't bring myself to look at him.
I guess Tom noticed, because a look of worry immediately spread across his face.
"What is it? What's wrong?"
I shook my head.
"It's nothing, I'm alright," I spoke quietly, my voice unsteady.
"No, Em, you're not. But if you don't want to tell me, that's alright. However, I am going to sit on your couch and watch TV and stay here until you feel better."
He walked past me and plopped down on the couch triumphantly, turning on Sugar Rush and sitting back, crossing his arms.
I let out a small laugh as I strolled over towards the couch, sitting down next to him a bit hesitantly with a small smile painted on my lips.
About twenty minutes into the show, my mind drifted off and the smile had faded. I was staring off into the still air that filled the room, until a thought hit me.
'I lost my chance.
I lost my chance.
I lost my chance.
I lost my chance.
I can't do anything anymore.
He's not mine, and he can't be.
I lost my chance.'
I quietly clapped a hand over my mouth as I bit my lip harshly, drawing a bit of blood to restrain the tears that began building up in my eyes.
'I am a terrible person.'
"T..Tom..." I mumbled, my hand moving to his arm.
He paused the show and sat up, turning towards me with concern as I looked down at my hands, which were now nervously fiddling with the hem of my shirt.
"What's wrong, Em?"
I inhaled sharply, my breath shaky.
'I can't tell him that.'
"U-uh.. I'm having a party tonight," I blurted out a random lie, immediately regretting it. "Do you want to come?"
"Oh, alright. Sure, that sounds lovely," He replied kindly, relaxing a bit. "Why don't I just stick around until then?"
I nodded with a small smile. "Okay."
'Oh god, why did I have to say that? I couldn't have said anything else, or even told him the truth? God, I'm a dumbass.'
I sent out texts to Lily, Haz, and a few other friends that lived near by, telling them about the party. Lily was a bit pissed at me, but it's not her apartment. Tom texted a few people as well, alerting them of the party.
We ordered food and bought a bunch of 6 packs of both beer and soda, all of which were displayed nicely in the kitchen, the beverages placed in a cooler that sat on the floor. It had been 2 hours since the first guest arrived, Haz. Guests had come and gone throughout the night, but close friends of Tom, Lily and I had stayed for awhile.
My vision was a bit blurry, and I stumbled over to Lily, who then grabbed my shoulders and stood me up straight in front of her.
"Em, you're drunk. Why don't you go lay down?"
I shook my head.
"No, no, I'm fine. Where's Tom? I need to talk to him."
"He's in the hallway. Emma, you'd better not do anything stupid. Don't be the dumbass you usually are."
I rolled my eyes. "I won't, mOM," I teased, before walking off lazily to the hallway that connected the living room and the bedrooms.
"Tom?"
"Hey, Em. You- You alright?" He asked, a concerned tone in his voice.
I nodded, though almost tripping backwards before catching myself. Tom chuckled a bit.
"Emma, you're so drunk."
"I need to talk to youuu," I mumbled, my words slurring.
"Alright, what about?"
I grabbed his arm and pulled him into my bedroom, though left the door wide open.
"I like you, Tom," I muttered, my drunken words leaving my lips uncontrollably.
"What?"
"I like youu."
"What do you expect me to say to that, Emma? I have a girlfriend!"
I nodded. "I know."
"Then wha-"
I grabbed his shirt and pulled him towards me, my lips crashing into his. I don't know if he kissed back or not, I was too drunk to care. I pulled away and he looked at me in shock.
"I'm leaving for Oregon in a few days. I'm going back to stay with my parents for a little bit while I look for an apartment. I can't stay here anymore. It hurts, Tom. It's really fucking painful to see you with someone else. But you're not mine. And I missed my chance, so...so I'm leaving. I'll find a new job over there. You have Haz, anyways."
"Emma, I-"
"What the hell?" A sudden voice from the doorway startled both of us, and I spun around, almost loosing my balance.
"Haz?" I mumbled.
"Anna?" Tom said, walking over to her.
"Don't touch me! You kissed her! You fucking kissed her!"
"No- darling listen to me, please. You know me. I would never do that to you! She kissed me, okay? I'm sorry."
"Whatever," She yelled, bursting out the front door and slamming it behind her.
"Haz, I'm-"
"Really, Emma? I thought you liked me. Was I wrong, or are you just a slut?"
"Woah, okay mate, back off. She's not a slut, that's rude as hell. She's very fucking drunk though. So I suggest you get in here and talk to her while I go get Anna, and we can all sort this out, yeah?"
Haz walked in the room, bumping Tom's shoulder as he passed, heading towards me.
'Oh for fucks sake. How much worse could this get?'
Tom ran out of the room and I heard the front door open and shut as he rushed out to go get Anna. I sat down on the edge of my bed and stared down at my hands.
Harrison eventually sat down next to me with a sigh.
"I don't get it," He spoke up after awhile.
Everyone had already left, Haz and I were left in my apartment, and Lily had passed out on the couch already.
"I'm sorry, Haz."
"Are you still.. Are you still in love with him?"
I didn't answer for a few minutes.
'Am I?'
I slowly nodded.
"I'm.. I'm so, so sorry Haz. I didn't know what I was doing, and I'm drunk, and I just-"
"It's fine."
"N-No, it's not."
He shrugged. "It's whatever."
Silent tears began rolling down my cheeks as my breath hitched.
"For the.. For the record, I do like you. A-a lot, actually. I'm sorry. I'm really sorry."
He stayed silent this time, and a few minutes later finally spoke up again.
"I think this might be.. A tad obvious.. But I don't think we should see each other anymore."
I didn't say anything.
'Why would he want to stay with me anyways?'Tom slowly came in through the door, leaning against the doorframe of the small bedroom.
"She broke up with me," He muttered.
"I'm sorry, mate," Harrison said, standing up.
I stayed quiet as I moved back towards the front of my bed and got under the heavy blankets, yawning as my eyes shut.
"I'm sorry," I mumbled, before passing out.••••••••
