It was time to meet her parents over dinner.
Fun...
I know nothing about her parents because she never really talked about them. Why am I so nervous to meet her parents? They seem fine I just need to stop having social anxiety.
"Ah! You heard the man. Let's go meet them shall we?" She said looking at me. "Uh...I dunno..."
"Mom can cook-"
"Fine."
I give in and get up. We walk out of her room and sit at the dining table with her parents. Her father sits across from Lane and her mom sit across from me.
We get handed plates of food. "Thank you." We each say. We started to eat our food and might I just say, damn this woman can cook.
I look around the house and the aesthetic is very clean and polished; seems to match her parents personally.
Lane breaks the silence. "How was work mom?" She continued to eat. Her mom smiled before saying, "Good. How was your day at school?"
Her mom looked sweet. She had short brown hair, blue eyes, and a few wrinkles in her eyes.
"It was fine" Lane replied. Her mom turns to her husband before saying, "How about you dear? How was work today?" He smiled, though I could tell its fake. "It was Okay."
Wow this conversation was so boring. Is this how family dinners are? They don't seem casual with each other at all, like its all an act. They were fake.
Her mom frowns a bit and then turns to Lane. "So, who is your...." She glanced at me. "Friend." Lane stated. Her dad let's out a sigh of relief and Lane glares at him.
Lane looks at me and motioned to introduce myself. I fix my poster.
"H-Hi. My name is....Isabella."
"Oh what a lovely name" her
mom replied with a smile. Psh. Not even close. Lovely? Please.I just smiled and agreed. "So what jobs do you guys have?" I asked sweetly and innocently.
"I'm just a simple waitress, dear."
Ok she seems normal.
"And I'm a pastor"
Fuck...
I know exactly why she doesn't talk about them. Her dad is a pastor, and she is a homosexual.
"You know, work today wasn't actually that okay." Her dad started.
"Oh? And why is that?" His wife replied.
"Those fags interfered with our protesting again."
The whole room went silent. Lane stops eating her food and she is frozen looking down. Her mom's face said nothing but worry. And Me? I was awkwardly sitting there.
"How so?" She added on to the conversation. "A mob came and started yelling at us and most of the people were on their side."
"Good..." Lane mumbled as she played with her food. Her dad looks at her with a glare. "What did you say miss?" She didn't answer. "Young lady, answer me." She kept on looking down. "I said good. I mean, at least they can see equality."
Her dad leans back on his chair. "Go on." he said with a smirk.
She looks him straight in the eye. "How do you see them? As just 'fags'? How would you feel if you get harassment all the time, say that you're going to hell, and that God hates you? I would be a little pissed too, even though I am."
"I can't help what the book says, or God. And its not my fault you chose to like girls."
Me and her mom stayed quiet.
"Choose?!? I didn't choose to be gay! I would've loved to be straight and not have to deal with your bullshit!"
"Watch your language!"
"Go to hell!"
Her mom put her hand on his shoulder. "Please calm down.." He shook her hand off. "Stay out of this."
"Why do you hate me so much huh? Just because of some, some book?"
"Its not 'some book'. Its the word of God."
"It probably got lost in translation! Seriously where does it say that homosexuals go to hell?"
He gets up from the table and goes to the bookshelf behind him and grabs a bible with bookmarks in it. "Example," he started as he slams the bible on the table wide open to show a verse highlighted.
Lane didn't even look at it.
"Leviticus 18:22
Do not lie with a men as one lies with a woman; that is detestable"Lane didn't believe it. "No, no, wait...hold on!" She pulls the bible closer to her so that she could see it better. As much as she didn't want to see it, it was there.
I couldn't bare to see her face. It had fear and horror painted across it. I look at her dad. "Yeah sure, but that's only one verse out of like...a thousand."
He glares at me and snatched the bible from his daughter and flips through it some more. In just a few seconds he found another one. He slams it again in front of Lane.
She looks at it to see another verse highlighted. She doesn't even need to read it. She knows what its about. She looked frozen and she was tearing up. "What?" She said so softly.
" 1 Corinthians 6:9-10
Do you know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God?" He started. Her eyes widen as he starts to talk. Tears kept on forming but not trailing down her face yet.
"Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immortal,"
"Okay..."
"Nor idolaters,"
"You can stop now.."
"Not adulteres, nor male prostitutes,"
"I get it..." Tears started to fall.
"NOR HOMOSEXUAL AFFENDERS, NOR THEIVES NOR THE GREEDY, DRUNKARDS WILL INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD!" He slammed his hands down on the table between every word. After he finishes that verse, Lane is crying. She couldn't control her tears.
For once in my life, I saw her unhappy. I touched her shoulder and she was shaking.
"IF YOU DON'T STOP BEING THE WAY YOU ARE, YOU WILL BE GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL!"
"ENOUGH!" I screamed.
Everyone was silent. All we could hear was Lane crying softly. I take her hand and lift her from the table. "Fuck you." I say as I lead her out.
We reach outside and close the door. I didn't know what to say. But then she smiled.
"You know what? Im in the worst mood of my life, I'm hyper, and I have my sidekick here with me."
I just stare at her. Has she gone mad?
"Come on." She pulls my arm and leads me to her car.
"What? Wait- what about?"
"Im getting wasted. Let's go to that party and forget everything that just happened!"
She smiles and stops crying. I smile back at her. If this is what will cheer her up then I'll do it.
"Let's do this..."
