It was history class, right before lunch, when it started to rain. I didn't pay attention to what the teacher was saying to instead watch the rain fall outside.
The bell rings and everyone rushed out of the classroom. I follow them out into the hallway.
As I'm walking, I see Lane at her locker. I go up to her from behind and tap on her shoulder. She turns around to see me.
"Well hello there." She smirked. "Hey. Lunch?" I asked her. She tucks some hair behind her ear. "Yeah."
We walk to the cafeteria together. As we go in, she leads me to a lunch table in the corner were no one was sitting. Then I asked her a question.
"Why here?"
"Do you want to sit with people?"
"You're right"
We sit down and have our normal conversations; teasing or complaining. Then she asked me a question out of nowhere that caught me off guard.
"Does it bother that I held your hand?"
Um?
It didn't bother me at all. I liked it to be honest. It comforted me through my anxiety. The only reason I let go was because she looked uncomfortable.
"No. It seemed like you had a problem with it to be honest."
She looked down. "People were staring."
"So? I get glares all the time." I took a pause before saying, "do you think it was because you were with me?"
She shot her head up. "No! Well, I mean yes, but no?"
"Yes or no?"
"Both"
"Yes or no?"
"I..I don't know."
"Yes you do."
"Of course she does!" Said a different voice. I look up to see some jocks. "Its because she is with you. She obviously- "
"Knock it off man!" I snap at him. Lane was quiet. She doesn't want to look bad with me, I get what they are saying.
"Standing up for your girlfriend?"
What?
"She isn't my girlfriend." Lane blushed a bit and looked down. "You guys are jerks, just leave her alone." I argued.
He leaned over the table to me and said, "Just hold her hand to comfort her~"
And with that, Lane jolted up from the table and rushed away. I watched her walk off out of sight and then looked at the jocks. I take the soda that Lane was drinking from, and splash it on their faces.
"You'll pay for that, freak."
They said as I walked off. "Come back here!"I follow Lane into the bathroom. I saw her looking at herself in the mirror but then stand up straight when she see's me walk in.
"Oh! Izzy..." I walk to her without saying anything and she tucks some hair behind her ear.
"Assholes..." I mumble. "Yeah." She says as I lean on the wall next to her.
"Its because you're with me." I said. "Stop saying that." She snapped sounding frustrated.
"Its true isnt it? I'll just ruin your reputation!"
"No you won't! I mean, not in the way that you think...but my reputation isn't good anyways!"
"Well I don't need to make it worse. You shouldn't even be seen with me."
"No! You shouldn't be seen with ME! That's the problem! Its targeted to me."
"Us, correction. Just admit it, you're ashamed of me!"
"What? No that's not it at all I-"
"Oh really? Me, the girl who got kicked out for a week that can also be a bitch at times is hanging out with the nice quiet one? Come on, just say I'm a bad person!"
"Ugh! If you would just listen-"
"That's why you are emBARRISED AROUND ME! JUST ADMIT THAT-"
"I'M A LESBIAN!"
.....
Oh...
Oh....
That explains alot of things...
