The weather in Elwood City was getting stranger and stranger. In the middle of the day the storm cloud was as black as a starless sky. Not a ray of sunlight was getting through, but all the plants seem to be doing just fine.
D.W. and Arthur in the den
Besides the storm, there was a more important matter that has to be solved.
D.W: I don't understand why she would call Pal, Treenie. It doesn't make any sense.
D.W. was pacing the in den by the couch, where Arthur was sitting.
Arthur: Pal has been acting strange lately. Maybe that's why Kate gave him a different name.
D.W: But how could have she heard of that name before?
Arthur: What do you mean?
D.W: I mean Kate never heard that name before.
Arthur: Maybe she did.
D.W: Impossible. That's the name of Vicita's imaginary friend.
Arthur: There are lots of people named Treenie. Such as Nadine. Can we watch Turtles, turtles, turtles now?
D.W: Who's Nadine?
Arthur: You know, your imaginary friend.
D.W: I never had an imaginary friend named Nadine. I did had an Imaginary Flying Pig named Snooter.
Arthur: But you do have an imaginary friend named Nadine.
D.W: No I don't.
Arthur: How could you forget about her?
D.W: Because I never forgot, because I never had an imaginary friend named Nadine.
Arthur: Never mind, this is getting no where. Let's just watch the show now.
Arthur picks up the remote and turns on the TV.
Brain, Lucia, and George (November 13, a Saturday Afternoon)
In George's bedroom, Brain studies the clouds with his telescope that he brought over at an open window, while George read a book on his bed, and Lucia is on her computer sitting on the floor.
Lucia did go back to boarding school, but once she learned about this strange thing happening, she came back for the weekend to study it with Brain.
Brain: This cloud doesn't make any sense. It's not from any pollution from any factory plants near by, but it not an ordinary cloud.
Lucia: And it looks like it's getting bigger.
Brain rushes over to sit by Lucia's side. On the computer screen is a live satellite feed above the Elwood City. Strangely enough, the giant black cloud is shaped like a circle.
Lucia: A minute ago it was below the Elwood City borderline. And now it's gotten miles outside of Elwood. In less than hour I believe it could spread to Crown City.
Brain: There has to be a logical explanation to this.
George: Why are you two in my room?
Lucia: Because we have no other place to do this.
George: There are hundred places you could be doing this. Your room...Brain's house in his room. I'm trying to read this book while you two talk about the strange cloud.
