We reach home in the afternoon the next day, Andres bouncing in his seat beside me.
'Calm down will you? We are almost there and then you can have your surprise.' I laugh at him.
He pouts his lips, 'I'm excited okay.'
Since this morning, in my sobriety, I have been walking on eggshells around Andres, I know I have to try and make him fall in love with me all over again. I don't know exactly when I lost him, whether it be when we moved here, when Zoey left, or when he left for Canada, but I need to rectify it.
When we finally pull into our driveway Andres' jaw drops so low I can see his tongue ring shining in his mouth.
Parked on our driveway, with a big red bow tied around the top, is a burnt orange mustang of the same model as the Aegean blue one he is hopping out of right now. I laugh and park my car fully and hop out as well.
'What do you think, do you like it?' I ask him nervously.
He looks as me wide eyes, 'You're joking, and is this really for me?'
I laugh at him again, 'Of course it is.'
Andres pulls me into a hug before rushing over to the car and sitting in the driver's seat. I roll my eyes. He begs me to go with him for a test run and I oblige. It takes us five minutes to snap the bow that's tied on the car and we are soon zooming out of the estate and onto the freeway.
Andres takes my hand as he presses the accelerator more and more, and for the first time this weekend, I feel content.
When we return home, Andres parks his new car in the garage and I park mine next his. He looks at me proudly.
We head inside and straight upstairs, where we snuggle on our bed. 'I love you Sage,' Andres whispers into my ears. All I can hear for a few seconds are the crashing wave's just outside and the even breaths of Andres.
'I love you too Andres.'
When I wake up the next morning, I am met with an empty bed. I check the time on my phone and note that it's later than I usually wake up, but still early enough that Andres won't have left for work yet.
I quickly leave the bed and head into the bathroom where I brush my teeth and freshen up before making my way downstairs. As I am halfway down I hear voices coming from the lounge and head there to investigate.
When I reach the room I see two smartly dressed men, who look to be around Andres and my age, sitting on the sofas; they look up when I reach the door. They both smile warmly at me.
I immediately feel my face heating up. I only have a bathrobe on, over my underwear. The robe, vile thing, stops just above my knees.
'Umm, hi?' I greet the two strangers, nervously.
The man closest to me stands up, with the other following suit, and offers me a hand, 'Morning, I'm Hunter Truair. This is my brother Christian. We are your neighbors. We live across your driveway.' Hunter greets me, his voice is like honey and cinnamon toast, smooth yet crackling. I shake hands with him and his brother.
'Sage Wolfgang, lovely to meet the two of you. Please excuse my inappropriate dressing.' I blush deeply.
'Oh don't be embarrassed, we did pop by unannounced.' Christian laughs.
At that moment Andres walks into the room.
'Sage, morning. I see you have met our neighbors,' he says as he hugs me.
'Would you guys like to join us for breakfast, I made waffles for Sage but there I plenty to go around.' Andres asks the two men politely.
I mentally wonder when Andres went shopping for food and whatnot.
'Oh no, we should really get going. We wouldn't want to impose,' Hunter says as he looks at Andres with a smile, I see two rows of perfect pearly whites.
'Please, do join us, it would be lovely to get to know our neighbors better,' I say, subconsciously holding eye contact with Hunter.
'Only if it is no problem,' Christian cuts in.
And so, Andres leads the brothers into the kitchen while I head upstairs to get dressed, feeling overly exposed in my bath robe. After a quick shower I dress in my suit and head back down, to the kitchen where everyone is waiting for me.
When I reenter the kitchen I take a seat beside Andres at the breakfast table, where a large stack of waffles and a tub of ice cream is set. Breakfast wasn't in my plans for this morning, I do have a busy day ahead of me. Nevertheless, I am always happy to meet new people.
'Let's eat,' I tell everyone at the table.
Andres smothers his waffles in chocolate syrup, opposites attract I think, as I reach for the tub of vanilla ice cream which coincidentally Hunter reaches for at the same time. I blush and let him take the first scoop.
'So, how long do you two know each other,' Christian asks brightly.
'Since high school,' Andres answers him.
'Ahh, high school sweethearts. Like my wife and I.' Christian coos. I blush again.
'The two of have an accent, where are you guys from.' Hunter asks intrigued.
'Australia, born and raised,' I answer proudly.
'Really, that wonderful. What made you guys move out here?'
'Business, my company took over a real estate agency in the area and I moved here to oversee the process and make improvements and whatnot, I'm the CEO of Wolfgang Properties.'
'I thought your name was familiar, you are the Sage that contracted our business to help with the upgrades at your office.' Christian says, laughing, 'What are the odds?'
'Really, what does your company do?' I say surprised.
'Truair is not a cool enough surname as Wolfgang, but I'm sure you have heard of us. I am the chairman of Truair Communications and IT, and my brother is an advocate. He owns his own firm, Hunter Truair and Associates.' Christian says proudly.
'Thank you for including me in your introduction Chris, even when I'm right here and have the ability to do it myself,' Hunter says, playfully slapping his brother on the back.
'Oh, it was only a pleasure baby brother,' Christian shoots back. The three of us burst out laughing as Hunter feigns anger.
'What about you Andres, what do you do?' Hunter asks.
The tips of Andres' ears turn red. 'I'm sure you guys know Mrs. Cunningham, she offered me a job at her firm not long after we moved here.'
'Like the board of the estate Cunningham? Wow, it's hard to get into her good books, well done man.' Hunter nods, impressed.
'I thought she was a huge homophobe?' Christian says looking at Hunter, who shrugs.
I frown.
The rest of breakfast consists of the four of us talking about the house and our recent anniversary which causes me to relive some rather unpleasant thoughts.
The two brothers, they are alright.
