"Dad?" Mithila called out, disbelief lacing her voice. She didn't know what emotions she was feeling.
Was she happy her dad was back? She didn't know.
Did she want her dad to come back? Yes.
So, why wasn't she happy? Her eyes travelled to her mom's small figure. trembling and shaking as her father held her mother in his arms. Her mom has tears streaking down her pale cheeks, something she hadn't seen in a while. Her mom was happy. So, why couldn't Mithila be happy too? Her dad was back. She doesn't remember the last time she saw that man. Was it her 17th birthday? Was it her parents' 34th anniversary? Her vision blurred lightly and she almost snorted in amazement; was she really crying? She wiped her eyes before any tears could slip out and stood on the doorframe, watching in amazement as her mom's tears dampened the uniform her father wore proudly.
She simply walked away, not knowing what to do, and sat down on her bed, and eventually fell asleep, her thoughts nothing but blank.
She woke up the next morning, a searing headache making its way through her head, and she fell back onto the bed, her vision blurred. She groaned in pain, her hand opening the drawer next to her and taking out the bottle of Advil, popping two in her mouth and swallowing them.
She stood up and walked to her dresser, and picked out a black skater dress, and picked out white low-cut converse. She took a quick shower and got rid of her headache and slipped on her outfit and shoes, and sat down in front of her mirror and quickly swiped on some eyeliner and a red lip balm. She picked up her bag from the bed behind her and quickly scrolled through the notifications, making sure there wasn't anything important, before clearing them all.
She slipped out of her room as quietly as she could, and walked to the kitchen, unnoticed- that is- until she dropped her phone, again. A string of expletives left her mouth as her parents walked out and looked at Mithila with an annoyed expression, "Where are you going?" Her mother asks.
"Out" she replies, before picking up her phone from the ground and stuffing the rest of her bread in her mouth and walking out, leaving her mother's house hanging open. She didn't know if it was the fear of coming out to her parents, or her father returning after three years and her not knowing how to react, that was making her act this way, but she intended to find out, before it got too far.
She found herself on the familiar red door on Amyra's house, and stared at the door while contemplating on knocking. Finally deciding on knocking, she knocked on the door which opened not a second too late, and before Mithila could speak a word, Amyra said, "What are you doing here?" the nervousness in her eyes was evident, and that's when Mithila knew; something was wrong.
She looked at Amyra in confusion, before answering, "I'm here to take you out, remember? We agreed to go somewhere of my choice today?"
Amyra sheepishly looks at the ground, before her eyes widen, and she pushes Mithila towards the back of her house and exited the house with her, and gripped onto her arm, "Don't come back, again." She mutters, before she lets her hand fall back. Mithila title her head to the side, "What? why?"
"Just don't, Mithila. I don't want to see you again, ever." Mithila yells, before tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "I told my parents about us. They think it's a phase. I'm not allowed to see you. Or contact you. I'm not even supposed to be talking to you right now."
Mithila could swear she heard her heart shatter into a million pieces. "So that's it then? You'll just give up on us? God, I can't believe you."
"At least I had the guts to tell my parents." Amyra fires back.
"You know what's it like." Mithila growls, tears slipping down her face and onto the ground. Amyra didn't bother to respond, before she sighs and says, "Don't contact me anymore, Mithila. I'll report you if you do it."
And that's what Mithila did. Walked away with her heart heavy, and another headache already forming.
