Ghosts can't sleep. Thats the first thing Karkat realized after sitting several hours in the bookstore waiting for something to happen so he could prevent his death. This seemed obvious but it doesn't really exactly occur to you when you're actually dead now does it? no. It doesn't. Anyway, Meulin was looking after the shop and Karkat is almost positive the only reason she was still there was because Terezi had told her to stay put. Terezi hasn't come back yet, Karkat figures shes still with his body. Sollux is probably there too. He said he was going to watch after the physical form after all. Time seems to keep changing though. One second its to slow, the next two hours has gone by. Almost like he ceased existing for different periods of time. Karkat had been sitting in his favorite chair at the built in starbucks, mulling over his situation. It certainly wasn't one he ever thought he was going to get into, but probably should have expected considering this author has a knack for killing, and he was far to clumsy to scathe through life without some sort of freak accident.
There were a surprising amount of dead wandering the streets, and it really disturbed him to think about how many times he probably walked through one. Finally, the clock striked 5 and the bell rang announcing to Karkat that there was a visitor. Karkat looked up over the counter that hid his spot and his eyes widened.
Kankri walked in briskly with an excited look on his face, instantly going up to the counter. Floating over Karkat looks at him frowning. Kankri started tapping his fingers on the counter, and Meulin came out of the back dusting her hands off from dealing with older donated books. Catching sight of him she frowns.
"Oh dear...Kankri yes?"
"Uhm..Yes, hello. Are you a co-worker of Karkat?"
"Yes..I'm sorry to have to be the one to tell you this but Karkat's been in a terrible accident." The bell rings again and Terezi rushes in holding your bag looking crestfallen. Going quickly over to Meulin and Kankri, Karkat feels himself flicker in and out of existance for a moment. It's the most saddening scene he'd ever seen. They speak in small whispers to eachother, and Terezi breaks out crying again. Meulin comforts her rubbing her back, wipping a few tears of her own, but Karkat can't see the look on Kankri's face.
~~Kankri's POV~~
An accident? What does she mean an accidnet?! He was just fine yesterday! He had to be okay!
"W-what do you mean? He's okay yes?" The woman opens her mouth to speak, but is cut off by Karkats other co-worker. Terezi? right? She normally worked the counter with him you think. She looked so sad.
"Oh god, oh god you actually came."
You give her a curious look. Why wouldn't you have come? You and Karkat were going to go over his story. She starts crying and the other lady starts comforting her.
"Karkat's in the hospital...He was hit by a truck this morning. They're trying to stabilize his condition, but he keeps coming in and out of it...They think he's going into a coma..."
You freeze. Karkat cannot be in a coma..Thats not possible this just had to all be a sick joke. This wasn't funny at all...but. Terezi was really crying..You think the other co-worker might be crying to. You just stand there stunded and wipe your eyes quickly feeling tears form.
"He...He really wanted you to read it, so take it. I-I don't want to look at it right now. H-he was really looking forward to seeing you again, Kankri..."
You take the bag she was holding out to you. You presume the beat up notebook was inside. You thank her in a small voice and give her a hug. How did something like this happen so suddenly? You don't quite know how to feel. You've barely known Karkat for a day, and they're trusting you with one of his (probably) most prized possesions. Why did you feel so empty and cold? did he really have such an impact on you in such a short time? Thats ridiculous! But...You can't deny the pit in your stomach. You let terezi go and give her a smile.
