You cradle Karkat in your arms as you weep silently into the hospital sheets wrapping his thing beaten lifeless frame. You let him slip through your fingers and you will never forgive yourself for this. You cradle his cheeks in your palms feeling the skin that would never flush. He wanted to date you. He wanted to go out on a date with you. By god you had such a chance in this life. All your years you had just been pussy footing around wondering what you wanted to do with it. Porrim tsking you from the sidelines saying that all you needed was in front of you, and she was right.
Karkat had been there the whole time. You brush the bangs from his face and press a gentle kiss to his nose. You had missed your chance. You should have listened. You should have taken the chance while you had it. He was what you wanted to do with your life. And as cliche it might be, you wanted to see yourself grow old with this dumb grumpy over emotional kid in your arms. The more you thought the more it ached. It ached to the very core. You re-break, sobs wracking your form as you wrapped your hand in his. It wasn't fair. It wasn't right. You nuzzle him, and imagine him wrapping his arms around you in comfort, you remember the nights you both stayed up, him floating over your shoulder as you tried to figure out what to write in that book. You remember how hard it was the first few weeks to stop smoking, but that rare smile slipping across his face was worth it. Karkat was worth each and every minute.
You wipe your tears away hiccuping and choking down a sob. You slowly release his form slipping your hand out of the cold palm of his, and rose from your place.
"I love you, Karkat."
Mr. Vantas, Peered in with the doctor with sad eyes. You gave them the most bullshit smile you have ever given, it feels like weights placed there upon your face. You hear something a kin to a whisper, but you brush it off. You watch as the faces of the doctor and Mr. Vantas go from hurt to surprised, a smile rising on each of their faces, you almost want to scream at them for such an obscene thing to do when the body of the boy you love is laying there, when you hear it again.
"Don't go." You turn on your heel eyes wide mouth agape, your hand putting your hand over it as if it would somehow do something to help the gasp that came out. Your tears instantly start to swell up in your eyes again, Karkat's eyes are open, his hand reaching out towards you, fingers extended with effort as if screaming at you to come back. "D-Don't go." You run over to him with a shout embracing him and letting it out. Your tears stain every inch of him, as he burries his face in your hair doing everything in his power to hug you back. It takes you a moment to realize those weak sounds coming from him, are sobs.
"I was so scared I wasn't going to see any of you again."
Sollux appeared sending the doctor into shock (a nurse had to drag him out reassuring him that such things couldn't just happen) and smirking at them. "The final requirement hath been filled." Terezi dashed in upon seeing the commotion and embracing you and Karkat both tightly crying tears of joy along with you all. It wasn't long till Karkat grunted motioning Sollux to get over there, and Sollux laughing with joy as he embraced them all. Karkat's father smiled watching them from the food of the bed.
He knew that Karkat's true father would be so proud of him. He knew his mother would be too. Suddenly, a song plays over the speakerphone, akin to a nursery ryhme put into song. A child had been born. In a matter of two days, Karkat would be free from the hospital, and back into the world with a breath of fresh air.
