Chapter 3: Friendships

(read an at the end. ITS SUPER IMPORTANT)

"How are you feeling?"

"I don't have feelings. I take them into an abyss deep within my soul and throw them off a cliff."

"Well that was oddly specific."

Max and Lucas were beside each other in Science, trying not to disrupt the class, again, by laughing their heads off. But Max couldn't hold in the small laugh that came dancing out of her mouth.

"No, seriously, how are you?" he asked, the sincerity etched into his voice. Max smiled at his concern and blushed slightly.

"I'm fine Lucas. Honestly." she laughs softly. He smiled and nodded, still trying to push the guilt bubbling up the surface once in a while. They turned their heads back to the board where Mr. Clarke was teaching them something about about atoms and molecules and some other stuff Max couldn't remember. Lucas however, was scribbling madly into his notepad while her facial expression voiced what she was currently feeling.

What the heck is he blabbing on about again?

She tried to understand what he was teaching but found herself growing more and more confused on what he was talking about. Lucas noticed the girl beside him, her eyes wide open and her mouth slightly hung open. He chuckles capturing the attention of the confused girl.

"Need help?" he offered, earning a small nod from the girl. He smiled and started to explain softly and pointed to his notes every once in a while. After about five minutes of his excellent and patient teaching, she was finally able to catch up and scribbled the things she learned madly, just like he did a while ago, which made a big smile to find its way to his lips as she bit her lip slightly in concentration.

She soon felt the weight of his eyes and she turned her head to meet his eyes. He looked away almost immediately and she giggled slightly when both their cheeks flushed. She looked back into her notebook looking satisfied with her understanding.

"Thanks Lucas." she whispered, making his head swirl.

"Anytime Maxine." he whispered back. She wasn't even annoyed this time. She only laughed and looked back into the board.

"Hey Jane! Wait up!" a voice she hadn't heard in quite a while rang through the hallway. She looked back and saw Mike jogging to catch up to her. She blushed slightly on how much he's changed. He wasn't the short little boy she remembered. He was now incredibly tall and handsome. He didn't have the short bowl cut he used to have, he had his beautiful curls that you would wanna touch. His freckles were now more evident and dusted his cheeks which only made him look better.

"H-hey." she stumbled through her words, making her groan internally. Mike only found it hilarious and apparently, mildly amusing.

"I was wondering...do you wanna...maybe...sit with my friends and I during lunch? Your friends are welcome too." he blushed slightly, holding his breath for the chance that she might reject his offer. However, she smiled and nodded.

"Sure Mike. See you there frogboy." she teased, and continued walking. He smiled at his old nickname and nearly jumped in joy. He might be able to salvage their friendship after all these years. Hopefully.

The long awaited time finally arrived, and made its presence via the bell. Lucas and Max ran out of their class laughing and talking, their hands brushing once in a while, making a blush to tint their cheeks. They had to separate when she reached her locker though, making a small sad smile to appear on both their lips. They part and she stuffs her books and notes into the already messy locker and walk to Jane's locker. She was already there with Beverly, both of them gushing about something.

"Hey!" she slung her arm over Jane and they both smiled.

"Great news Max! Mike invited all of us to sit over their table today!" she smiles and Max swore she saw a tint of red on the tip of her ears and cheeks.

"Oooh okay!" Beverly smirked, earning a small slap on the arm from Jane. She couldn't stop smiling, and you could see that she really did miss her old friend.

"Well, let's go!" Max dragged both of their arms to the cafeteria, Beverly complaining that she was 'suffocating her poor arm'. She ignored her protests and continued to find the table and gasped when she saw Lucas.

She walked over dragging the two shy girls who could barely keep it together. One was a blushing mess while the other was a hurricane of 'ows' and 'screw you maxines'.

Yeah, she ignored both.

She sat down on the bench opposite of the boys and shot a smile at Lucas, who had a bright smile dancing on his lips. Mike looked happier than ever, and his eyes showed one message.

I'm glad you came.
