cause right now I see all these people that love me, but i still feel alone. can't help but check my phone. i could've made you mine. but no, it wasn't meant to be and see, i wasn't made for you, and you weren't made for me. though it seemed so easy.

The following days after the failed date was as awful as anyone could imagine. The group that sat together during the jolly time of lunch were separated into two, the boys and the girls, like before. It wasn't because they didn't want to be friends, but because they have to comfort their bashful friends. Jane became more introverted and soft-spoken, which alarmed everyone. She was never shy. She was always the first to speak up for a fellow classmate, the first to defend, the one who wasn't afraid to voice out her opinion. No, shy was never a word to describe her. Yet, now she barely spoke, but when she does, it's soft, weak, and wobbly.  But Mike however, was puzzling.

Mike was never the guy to be late to class, spacing out when he does show up, and definitely not the type of person you would find hidden behind piles of astronomy books in the library. He used to be the soft, but loud when needed. He always backed up anyone who needed help. He was playful, barely ever serious, but took his classes focused and tried his best. He never was late to class until these past few weeks.

But the real shock that came was exactly two weeks after, when Mike Wheeler, who shocked the girls who were encouraging the girl with soft waves cascading down her shoulders and tucked beneath her jacket hoodie to eat her sandwich. He strolled to the table, and the girls looked at him in awe and silently asked what he was doing. Jane, however didn't seem to notice the figure looming over her table. She was still picking at her food, staring blankly at her food, her soft bottom lip in between her teeth. A habit she developed when she was in deep thought. She continued to furrow her eyebrows and creased forehead as she thought deeply.

"Ahem." Mike cleared his throat making her head snap up to meet the eyes she hadn't seen in weeks. A look of disbelief was painted across her face as she stood up and followed him out.

He leaned on the white washed wall outside, folding his arms, looking at her. She couldn't help but notice, beside the circumstances how dashing he looked. His hair was untamed like usual, his blue shirt half untucked from his jeans.

"Jane, what happened." he asked her softly, making her eyes go wide at how sensitive and soft his voice sounded. She shook her head and whispered tenderly,

"Nothing Mike. He just...wanted help with the chores." she finished lamely, looking down at her shoes silently reprimanding herself with her terrible excuse. Mike rolled his eyes and grunted.

"Stop lying Jane. Friends don't lie."

Her head snapped up again at their old saying. She remembered that time.

"Jwane! Dwid you see my twoy soldwier?" Mike walked down to her basement, seeing her wiping tears away from her red cheeks. He walked towards the small girl and sat down beside her.

"M-Mike. Uwh, ywour twoy? I have.. havwen't seen it." she squeaked, looking down at her lap.

"Jwane. Cwome on. I know youw're wying. What hwappend? Fwiends dwon't wie." he softly said. She looked up at him nodding and revealed broken pieces of the soldier clutched between her small fist. Jane looked up to meet his eyes, fearing the fury in it, but instead met soft brown ones. Her eyes started watering and Mike pulled her in for a hug.

"Jwane .It's owkay." he smiled hugging her and walking back up the stairs.

"I'm sorry Mike. I just can't tell you. Not yet." she looked up at him with droplets of tears staining her red cheeks. Mike reached over to hold her hand but she moved, dodging his warm hand.

"Mike. Don't make this any harder. Don't you see? We're not meant to be. And, maybe it was a mistake." she looked down again, blinking back the stinging tears. Mike recoiled and looked at her in disbelief.

"Look, maybe I don't have feelings for you...maybe it was just because we missed each other. Either way, we're best friends Mike. I don't want to ruin that." she avoided his eyes, blinking back tears. Mike just stared at her, mixed emotions bubbling in his chest. How could she?

"Okay Jane. If that's what you want." his jaw hard, he walked away, leaving her blinking back hot tears and failing miserably.

Max was never the type to be all giggly and be the girl in that skipped or whatever. But, right now, she absolutely hated herself.

She slammed her locker shut, ignoring the glares people gave her and just flipped them off. She skated down the hallways, ignoring the teachers' protests as she skated down, barely missing the student's bodies. After a while, she got to the apple tree behind the school, where nobody went. It was their spot. And only theirs. She sat underneath the shade of the giant tree, the bed of fresh grass and flowers soft enough for her to sleep on as she rested her head on her folded sweater. Her  ginger hair was swept to one side, her long eyelashes dusting her freckled, pale cheeks. She heard the faint sound of the busy kids rushing off from school and she cancelled them all out, and instead focused on the sound of the birds tweeting and the soft whispers of the breeze. It seemed like a scene from a sappy, rom-com to be honest.

"Max."

Her eyes opened, wincing at the bright glare of the sun which mercilessly shone as bright as she could. She turned to see Lucas, who sat down beside her and laid down. They lay in silence for a while, enjoying the peaceful silence only they could have. Max soon spoke, her voice soft, almost like a whisper. She felt the familiar flutter of the lavender butterflies that were stationed there, landing on her red hair.

"What do you think's gonna happen?" she fears the answer that could come out of his mouth. She was afraid of the events that would follow after their best friends' fight occured. He only scrunched up his forehead though, and shrugged gently.

"Honestly, I don't know...but no matter what. Do you swear on your skateboard that we'll still be friends?" he tried lightening up the mood, half serious and half kidding, but Max only chuckled and turned to him.

"I swear." she said solemnly, making both of them smile.
