"Starcourt Mall...4:45...Scoops Ahoy...Got it. See you there!" she hung up, placing the silver telephone back, gasping when she found herself in a newfound situation. The spiral cords of the phone were wrapped around her petite body, decorating her like a Christmas tree. She just got off the phone with Mike and she could admit it. She might have enjoyed hearing his voice way more than she should. A small blush tinted her cheeks as she unwrapped herself from the phone and walked away, clearing her throat nervously.
The lunch was possibly the best time she has ever had. They made up for all the time they were apart, and she found herself growing closer to him. She knows that she missed him, but had a feeling in her chest whenever she had even the slightest contact with him. Tingles ran up her spine and a feeling bursts in her chest. And no doubt, she heard the nagging voice in the back of her head. But, she chose to ignore that voice and listen to the other.
"You just missed him."

"Ouch!...Yep that's my foo- OW! LUCAS I SWEAR-" she got stopped by the boy who clamped his hand over her mouth, shutting her up effectively. She rolled her eyes and bit his hand, making him drop his backpack and yelp.
"Remind me WHY THE HECK are we SPYING on MIKE?" she spat out, thrusting the backpack into his arms making him almost fall into the bushes with it's thorns ready to stick into his skin.
"Because MAXINE. He asked Jane out! We need to see what will happen!" he defended, taking his binoculars out of his bag making Max groan and kick his shins. He swore and almost kicked her back before he stopped himself.
"If they ARE going to go out, we should leave. Come on Lucas!" she whined gripping his hand and tried to pull him up, but he dug his heels on the soil and continued to look through, with a small satisfied smirk on his face, knowing the girl won't be able to pull him up. She basically gave up struggling and huffed, throwing a handful of soil unto his clothes. He swore but ignored the red head who leaned against him while muttering incoherent words which only made him chuckle. She ignored the smell of weeds and soil and instead focused on the comforting scent of Lucas.
"Hey Lucas."
"Hm." he hummed in response. She sighed and sat up, she too facing the window.
"Hand me a pair would ya?" she gestured to the other binoculars. He grinned and handed her one, making her smile. They both laughed when they saw Mike walk out nervously, fiddling with a bunch of flowers. Max smiled and nudged Lucas which made him laugh.
"He's such a geek!" he laughed through Max's hand that was clamped on his mouth. She 'shhed' him and giggled slightly, watching Mike intently. He walks away to ride his bike to pick Jane up. Lucas quickly packs the things he left scattered all over the ground. Max quickly ties her unkempt, cascading ginger hair into a messy ponytail and dusted her jeans.
"Let's go. You made me curious." she teased, bending down to hide behind the bushes while walking. They followed him to Jane's house after ten minutes of walking filled with 'duck!' and 'shut up!'. They finally reached her house and before Max could laugh at the look at Mike's face, Jane came out of the door. But not with a smile.
Tears smudged with mascara were trailing down her face as she ran down the steps and wrapped her arms around him
"What is happening? Why is she crying?" Max sputtered out, eyebrows furrowed with worry. Lucas shrugged but his forehead creased with worry as well. The lamp post's bright orange light casted shadows on half of their faces but they could her their voices clearly. She crept closer to them, her body still hidden between the green bushes that were sprinkled with thorns.
"I'm sorry Mike. I can't go. My dad...he said no. I'm so sorry-" she sobbed into his shoulders while her tears dampened Mike's striped shirt.
"Shhh...it's okay. It's okay." he whispered other comforting words into her ear while he breathed in the jasmine smell of her hair and the rose scent of her clothes. Lucas and Max looked at each other while their eyes displayed confusion and sadness.
"Why?" Max mouthed to the dark-skinned boy.
"I have no idea." he mouthed back.
She looked back at the tragic scene of their two best friends who were crying while the other was blinking back the hot tears that stung his beautiful brown orbs. While the wind tousled her hair, Max looked at her best friend's window that revealed a shadow walking closer and closer to the window, where a perfect view of the two people were. Her shiny sapphire eyes widened and almost jumped, revealing where she was hiding.
"Lucas! It's Hopper! He's watching! We need to break their embrace apart NOW before she gets into bigger trouble." she hissed, violently nudging him almost making him scream. She closed her eyes in concentration before she opened them again and crouched jogging towards the driveway as if she just got there. Immediately, Jane notices her stressed face as she ran to grab Mike's arm, hissing at him to be quiet before words could form from his oval shaped mouth. Dragging him by his arm, she threw him into the bush where they were hiding and Lucas covered his mouth while he mouthed a 'thanks' at Max who nodded. The three looked to the window where Hopper, now clearly looked at Jane who still had silent tears rushing down her cheeks but also had a confused expression. Hopper, satisfied that no one seemed to be with her, walked out of her room and they unburied themselves from the pile of dead leaves Lucas buried their bodies with last minute and Jane rolled her eyes at the sight of her two friends.
"You were spying on us?" she threw her hands up in annoyance.
"What makes you think that?" Lucas threw back, clutching his backpack.
"Uh how about the fact that you have binoculars in your left hand while Max has one too AND a flashlight?" she folded her arms, lifting one eyebrow at the pair who squirmed, guilty of her accusation.
"Well if we haven't been spying on you two, Mike would have been dead. And so would you." Max defended while Jane sighed, knowing it was true.
"JANE! DINNER!" Hopper's voice bellowed from the lit house. Jane sniffled and whispered weak goodbyes to her friends, promising she would explain what happened soon. She trudged down the stone path, while Max and Lucas helped Mike get home.
