The hospital went rather quickly. I put my emotions aside for the sake of my sister. I mean having a kid must suck. I went in, said hello. Then was ushered away so my mom and sister could have "alone time"
I sat in my truck and fell asleep. I texted my mom and told her to come wake me up in the morning when she was ready to leave.
I called Nick and left him a Goodnight voicemail, I missed him already.
——————————
The next morning I woke up to a slamming on my window.
"Flynn lets go say goodbye!" She yelled as she pounded on my window.
Fine.
I kept it as short as possible with my sister and her asshole, abusive boyfriend/fiancé-whateverthefuck.
My mom didn't know it, but one year when they were down I watched him pimp slap her across the face because she "disrespected his name" at the dinner table. She just made a joke. I pulled him aside and told him if I ever saw him hit her again I would scoop his eyeballs out with a spoon.
My sister defended him, and later called me and told me "it had never happened before this". Bullshit.
————————The ride out started very quietly. It wasn't until we passed through Boston she asked
"So how was Vermont? I know it was short but...""Well..." I took a deep breath, not sure how she would take this
"I'm going back up after I drop you off, and I'm not coming home"
I sighed a breath of relief."Wh-wh-what?!" Her tone instantly changed to cold.
"Where do I even start..."
As I drove, I told her all about how me and Nick found each other and started blossoming again, I told her about how we always had feelings for each other, and how this was my time to fly the coop.
"You know what?!" Her voice wild and angry
"After everything I did your going to live with some fling you 'always had feelings for', fucking unreal!" She cursed and made air quotes with her hands.
I said nothing. I felt nothing. I needed home, I needed Nick.
"10am tomorrow, leave your cell phone. Your not taking anything but clothes Flynn." She rambled on.
"I paid for everything you have and your going to disrespect me by leaving your single mother alone in the city?" She loved playing the divorce card."Actually, give me your phone now." She stuck her hand out. I ripped the SIM card out from it as I steered with my knee and handed it over.
Keep it.
She rolled down the window and threw it out into the busy highway.
I was still silent. I was done.
——
I packed my things as my mother watched me through the window like a hawk. I didn't give a shit. I was taking all the vintage art work from my room. It would look nice to decorate Nicks walls anyways.I decided I was leaving after I finished packing. Even if I had to stop for a nap. I was leaving as fast as possible, and not looking back.
——————I threw the last bag of clothes in the cramped cab of the truck. I started the engine and pulled out with a final burnout leaving the house. I merged onto the highway and carried down the road until I reached the place I was looking for, the New Republic Truck Stop.
The reason? They had a pay phone.
I pulled around the building and next to the pay phone bank. There was a row of about 15 phones, but only two were still in service.
