I placed the phone back on the counter. I was shaking. Jane told me about where he was being transported to. All I remember is not responding and hanging up the phone.

"Sir? Are you okay?" I heard the girl behind the counter ask. My vision was going wonky, I felt like I was looking through a kaleidoscope.

"You look like your going to pass out" she sounded concerned.

My hand just let go of the coffee and it exploded on the floor.

"S-s-Springfield Hosptial" I stuttered.
Now two employees had come around the counter.

"Springfield hosptial? That's like two hours from here. What's there?" My vision was stabilizing. I could feel my heart slamming into my rib cage.

"Nick." I turned on my heel and walked towards the door.
I heard the employees asking me to come back and sit down. I didn't have time. I had to go.

—————

I quickly checked my chains and got on the highway. I put all my emergency lights on and pushed old 072 to its limit. A million thoughts crossed my mind.

What happened?
How bad is he hurt?
Why did this happen?

I raced. Weaving through the mid morning traffic. Laying on the air horn through the city traffic. I knew where I had to go. My mind was focused on one thing.

Nick.

—————

"Good Morning Folks this is KLER AM, ST.Johnsbury's Number one for News; Traffic; and Ski Conditions.
Adam Pelitier has your traffic"
-
"Good morning Rich,
Route 4 in Woodstock is still closed at this hour due to a Major crash involving a flatbed tow truck. The driver has been airlifted from the scene. Investigators are trying to piece together what happened this morning-"

I shut the radio off and pushed the accelerator to the floor.

—————

I made the trip in record time. I don't even think I smoked a cigarette.

I ran the curb over as I grabbed second gear pulling into the emergency entrance.
I parked right in a lane saying "Ambulances Only" and ran through the front doors up to the counter.

"N-Nick Nolan, where is he?!" I barked at the receptionist.

"Sir, calm down." She asked as she typed into her computer.

"Where. Is. Nick?" I barked again. Even louder.

"Sir go sit down over there I'll call you up when I can." She threw me an tone.

"Listen you fucking CUNT; I just drove 130 miles to get here to see my FUCKING man. Now where the FUCK is he!?!" I screamed so loud I think the whole ER heard me.

Two security guards grabbed me by either arm and I yelled out.

"Fuck off where is Nick!" I screamed.

"Come outside and cool off man" they dragged me out the door and I begged, crying now, for Nick.

"Where is he?!" I sobbed as a Mercedes G Wagon screamed up to the entrance. Through my tears I looked up and it was Jane and Dre.

"We got this boys" Dre waved off the security guards.

I was sitting in a snowbank crying my eyes out. Jane knelt down in front of me.

"Go move his truck Dre" she shot.

I hugged Jane and cried. She was emotionless. Just held me as I sobbed.

"Okay, Flynn. Listen to me."

"HE GOT FUCKING MED-FLIGHTED?!" I screamed, remembering hearing it on the traffic radio station.

"Where the fuck is he?!" I screamed at Jane.

"He's in surgery." She said firmly.

My heart shattered. I rolled onto my side in the dirty snowbank and cried. I couldn't even compose myself. Jane and Dre knelt next to me.

"Let's go wait for him and get you cleaned up?" Jane said, her tone as usual, firm and dark.

I wiped my eyes as Dre wrapped an arm around my waist and we walked in through the emergency room and into an elevator. We got off and the third floor and they walked me into a room. It had a few leather sofas and a big bay window.

Jane and Dre came back in with a cup of coffee for me. I had stopped crying for now.

"So, here's what happened." Jane took a deep breath and began.

"Nick was hooking up to a car, he was on the downhill side of the road. Another vehicle came over the crest of the hill and lost control. It spun sideways, pinning him into the side of the wrecker. We aren't sure of his condition. They took him into surgery right away." She inhaled sharply.

I couldn't speak. I couldn't move.
I wish it had happened to me. The image of a car sliding towards him and slamming him into the side of his truck flashed into my mind.

I stood up and everything went black.

————————

I woke up to a nurse waving something under my nose. I blinked a few times and looked around. I was still in the same room.

"Feeling okay?" She asked.

I slowly sat up, Dre had a smile on her face. Jane looked haunting as always.

"Where's Nick?" I asked.

"Still in surgery Flynn, you've only been out for 5 minuets" Dre chuckled again.

"What's so funny?" I asked.

Dre burst out laughing.
"You fell to the floor so hard!" She laughed. Even the nurse smiled.

"You seem to be okay, just relax, I'm sure your brother will be okay. I'll check in with you in a bit. " She swiftly stood up and exited the room.

"Brother?" I asked.

"Direct family only allowed in the OR" Jane whispered and winked.

We went outside and had a cigarette. I nervously paced back and fourth.

We went back up and I approached the nurses station.

"Any updates?" I asked.

"They should be done soon, I'll get you when he's back in recovery." She said kindly.

——————

It seemed as though hours passed since I arrived to the hospital.

I anxiously waited for the doors to open and a doctor to enter. Jane and Dre sat with me, Jane occasionally answering the phone and Dre trying to make small talk.

Finally, the doors swung open.

A man wearing a stark white lab coat entered. He was an Indian man, about 25, short and very dark skinned.

"Flynn is it?" He spoke in perfect English.

"Y-y-Yes sir" I jumped from my chair.

"No, please sit. I have a lot to tell you."
