The Boy That Stole My Heart

A few weeks had gone by since we started at Dawson.
Jess has finally gotten the OK to go out on the road. Since we've moved out she's been slightly more distant, citing that she needs to work things out with her other half.

It was a quiet night in the tow business. Most of the drivers all hung out in the Mechanics Bay, but the three of us always took the break room over. It had wonderful couches that we sprawled out on.

I had been working on 072 for a week now, fixing a few minor problems. Cleaning endlessly, polishing the chrome. She cleaned up nicely for an old truck. I had the mechanics order me a new bench seat and a few other minor items.

While we were all sitting around waiting for calls, the overhead pager dinged.

"FLYNN ENGLISH, dial 8255, FLYNN ENGLISH 8255" click.

I walked over to the phone sitting next to the couched and punched 8255, not ever sure who's extension I was calling.

"Dawson Creek, Jane." She said firmly.

"Hi, it's F-"

"You can take your truck out tonight by yourself, I have to say I'm impressed, don't forget Flynn,
Don't f-" my turn to cut her off.

"Don't fuck up, I know ma'am"
I smiled as I enjoyed finishing her punchline.

She didn't respond, just hung up.

All the sudden, the three of our radios toned out.

"Fatal roll over, pileup; Federal Hill Drive, units respond. 072, 471, 999, T1, safety 2 and 4" the three of us jumped up and nearly ran out to our trucks. It hit me, I was on my first solo tow with my new truck.

"072 departing" I hung the microphone and shifted through the gears, following the third largest wrecker, driven by Dre, 999.

We rolled town the road, emergency lights, blaring through the dark. All 6 trucks motored down the highway towards our wreck.

"999; all units on scene" Dre keyed up.

The everybody got into position, I backed up to a little Ford ranger that had spun out. Nick went over and began to hook a civic. Dre backed up and started rigging a box truck. Jess and the other flagger slowly let traffic through the accident scene in the remaining open lane. It was getting moved along rather quickly.

I was almost finished loading my truck when I saw Nick hustle over to help.

"Get these tire straps on and  roll" he said firmly. Checking my chain work.

I pulled out of the scene third, behind Nick and Dre.

"Great job Flynn" Dre called on the radio.

"Yeah, great job Flynn" Jess Keyed up now too.

Nick joined in too

"Nice work"
short and sweet, just like him.

I shifted into the next gear and smiled so wide. I felt like this is meant to be. Life had finally come together.

We all got back and dropped off our cars in the lot and returned into the building.

Jane stood by the doorway, dragging on her Marlboro light.

"Nice job, Flynn"
A wry smile on her face.

"Thank you Ma'am"
