To most, a game of Chess is exactly that; a game. Designed to entertain those who think that their intellectual prowess exceeds that of ordinary people. To provide us with enough harmless conflict to keep us sane.
To others, it is an enthralling battle that provides the knowledge of War and the tactics needed to keep a Kingdom alive. Secure your defences, use the oppositions weaknesses against them, and protect the King at all costs.
Lotor's kingdom is crumbling. He can hear the whispers of doubt from his subjects, the disloyalty in their eyes; they do not respect him anymore. The board is collapsing beneath him, and what's worse, his Queen, his most powerful ally; has betrayed him. Left him for the opposing King. The weak King with no voice to command and no subjects to lead. The imbecile that has tainted his Queen, yes, his Lance. But he would get him back.
To achieve victory one must destroy the King.
But one cannot win chess without sacrificing a few pawns.
