A P R I L
I look up and down the halls for any sign of one of my friends. I haven't seen Charity or Mason since yesterday and the last time I saw Quinn, she was surrounded by an envoy of other girls, deep in conversation. She wouldn't give me a second look.
What happened?
I wasn't able to join in on the Movie Marathon yesterday, all thanks to my parent's impromptu arrival. It's not like it was a happy affair either. They left just this morning, and Yvonne sullenly watched them go through the window without saying goodbye.
I texted Charity about it, and she was understanding of my situation. Are they all mad at me?
No. That makes no sense.
I shake my head and all but run down the hallway. I see Alex down the bend, but I can't stop for him now. When he see's me running towards him, there's a panicked look in his eye. I've seen that often whenever we come into close contact nowadays.
I completely disregard this and race past him. I can imagine the perplexed expression on his face as he turns around and watches me, but it doesn't matter now. I've got to get to Mason's locker.
I skid down the hallway so fast I think I may have left scorch-marks, but it's worth it when I see him pulling out a few textbooks and dumping them on his arms.
I smooth out my hair and calmly walk towards him.
"Hey."
Mason jumps, drops the textbooks and whirls around, eyes wide in alarm.
"Oh. April...Hi..."
He clears his throat and picks his books up off the floor. "Shame you couldn't come yesterday."
He fiddles around and doesn't look me in the eye. I shift my weight to one foot and lean against the locker.
"You're acting really sketchy."
Mason shakes his head and swallows. "No. I-"
I cut him off, holding up a hand in the air. "Where's Charity?"
"Charity?"
He says her name like he's never heard her before.
I roll my eyes. "Blond hair? Blue eyes? Will kick your ass if you call her basic?"
Mason nods. "Oh-h...Yeah..."
I raise an eyebrow at him, waiting for a reply. He rubs his forehead with the palm of his hand and stares at a point on the ceiling.
"Um. H-Have you talked to Charity since yesterday?"
I shake my head. "No. That's why I want to know where she is. Are you guys avoiding me?"
Mason shakes his head. "No. Of course not...We're all just avoiding each other at the moment."
I cross my arms. "What does that mean?"
He doesn't reply, so I ask another question. "Why won't Quinn talk to me?"
He looks pained. "She won't talk to anyone right now."
I groan. "Oh no. What happened? What did I miss?"
Mason sucks his cheeks in and looks like he's debating giving me an answer. One of his lacrosse teammates walks up to him, claps him on the back and doesn't spare me a glance.
