A lot had changed over the summer holiday for all of the Marauders.

Peter, having grown tired of being the James and Sirius' 'chubby friend', decided to spend the summer trying to cut off a few pounds. He exercised every day and managed to lose about twenty pounds. Unfortunately, he was still nowhere near as fit as his three best mates, but he was close enough to hopefully lose the harsh title he'd gained over the previous five years at Hogwarts.

James decided to start growing facial hair after Lily's comment of his lack of maturity. He took her comment to heart and tried to alter his physical appearance to fit the 'mature man' she was looking for. His father, Fleamont, worked with James over the summer on a potion to grow facial hair. James became his willing test subject and victim to the many, many—possibly intentional—failed attempts. By the end, James felt confident with his short, needle-like stubble, and ignored anyone and everyone who commented on how patchy and truly awful it looked. The only opinion he cared about was Lily's.

During the summer, James had also found himself with a new sibling who had knocked on his door in the middle of the night. Sirius, after the excessive abuse from his parents, had run away from his home with his hair cut much shorter than it had ever been. Walburga, Sirius' mother, had tried to hack his hair off when she saw him running out the front door with his trunk in hand. He ran several blocks before jumping onto the Knight Bus. He soon found himself stood in front of his best mate, James Potter's, house at 2:36 in the morning, dripping wet from the rain. Fleamont and Euphemia took him into their home with open arms as an honorary Potter. Since that night, Sirius had held a much happier aura than anyone had ever seen him with before.

Remus' holiday was a bit more exciting than his friends'. Not only had his werewolf caused several new scars during the full moons—including a few that stretched across his face—he had also undergone several drastic growth spurts and discovered something about himself that took him the majority of the summer to accept. Remus had always been the shortest of the four Marauders, but puberty had finally come, causing his height to increase almost a foot, now standing at 6'2.

At the end of the previous year, Remus had decided that the bond he had with Sirius was different from the bonds he had with James and Peter. It was a stronger relationship, though he couldn't quite understand how it was different. He decided to confide in Lily, who asked him the simple, yet overwhelming, question: 'Are you gay?'. Remus denied every time he was asked and ignored Lily's knowing gazes whenever she spotted the two together through the remainder of the year. He refused to accept such a crazy idea because he didn't want to be identified, even by himself, as a gay werewolf. Let alone a gay werewolf that fancied his undeniably straight best friend.

However, upon experimentation and unintentional research with a few Muggle girls from his town over the first few weeks of holiday, strictly to prove Lily wrong, Remus finally admitted defeat and accepted this new discovery. He didn't have to tell anyone, and it wasn't like he would act any different once they were back at school. At least he hoped he wouldn't. He had never shown much interest in girls or relationships anyway.

Sirius was standing with James and his parents on Platform 9 ¾, smirking and fighting back laughter with Fleamont as Euphemia fussed over her son. She held his face squished between her palms as she littered his tan skin with audible kisses, ignoring his protests and squirms.

"I really wish you would have shaved your face, Jamie. You're not ready to have facial hair. You need to learn how to groom it, so it will grow properly. It looks too patchy and—" James had stopped listening to his mother. He was sick of everyone telling him how bad it looked. He didn't care. It made him look more mature, which was exactly what Lily had said he should be the previous year.
